Be synonymous with
經濟學人例句1：
Schio soon became synonymous with high-quality textiles, which were exported all over Europe and beyond.
斯基奧很快成為高品質紡織品的代名詞，產品出口到整個歐洲以及世界各地。
這裡面的became synonymous with相當於was synonymous with，注意介詞搭配是with。
從這句話還可以學到all over Europe and beyond這個表達，含義是「歐洲以及世界各地」，類似的「中國及全世界」就可以借用這個表達翻譯為all over China and beyond。
經濟學人例句2：
For outsiders, FedEx is synonymous with the business it pioneered: the overnight delivery of packages.
對行外人而言，聯邦快遞（FedEx）是它所開創的次日達快遞業務的代名詞。
從這句話還可以學到pioneer這個動詞的用法，含義是「開創；倡導」。作動詞的時候，pioneer一般指的是在某一個具體領域發揮先鋒或者倡導作用。
例如，a new technique pioneered by surgeons in a London hospital由倫敦一家醫院外科醫生開發使用的新技術。
Pioneer還可以當名詞，比如高齋CATTI和MTI班我講過這句：
這些開拓事業之所以名垂青史，是因為使用的不是戰馬和長矛，而是駝隊和善意；依靠的不是堅船和利炮，而是寶船和友誼。
These pioneers won their place in history not as conquerors with warships, guns or swords. Rather, they are remembered as friendly emissaries leading camel caravans and sailing treasure-loaded ships.
這裡我順便提下「處於領先地位」和「率先幹某事」的表達，這兩個可是CATTI和MTI漢譯英中很高頻的表達：
「處於領先地位」可以說sb lead sp in sth或when it comes to sth, sb lead sp. 如金融時報這句：
We lead the world in online retailing and advertising.
在在線零售和廣告方面，我們全球領先。
這句其實也可以改為
When it comes to online retailing and advertising, we lead the world.
「率先幹某事」可以說take the lead in doing sth，例如金融時報例句：
Active fiscal policy will soon take the lead in stimulating the economy.
積極財政政策很快將在刺激經濟方面發揮帶頭作用。
還比如19年11月CATTI三筆漢譯英真題這句：
杭州作為著名旅遊城市，又率先實踐「旅遊外交」。
Hangzhou, a renowned tourist city, again took the lead in implementing the policy.
在這篇外刊精讀：刷臉支付，讓支付更便捷！| 衛報雙語 我們也有見這個用法：
Alipay, the financial arm of e-commerce giant Alibaba, has been leading the charge in China with devices already in 100 cities.
中國電商巨頭阿里巴巴旗下金融部門支付寶（Alipay）已經在全國100個城市率先推出了刷臉支付服務。
has been leading the charge in China也可以說has taken the lead in rolling out facial recognition payment technology in China.
我們學習英語或翻譯，要多聯繫之前學過的東西，比如看到這個，我又想起了去年高齋CATTI和MTI翻譯班講過的19年6月CATTI二筆英譯漢真題，其中有「spearhead率先發起」這個單詞：
...has spearheaded a brand of school reform...
……率先發起了教育改革……

a synonym for
經濟學人例句：
Where once 「prosperous」 was a synonym for overweight, being fit (and thin with it) is a marker of status.
「豐滿」一度是超重的代名詞，保持健美（或瘦）是身份的標誌。
從這句話還可以學到，Overweight「超重」，a marker of「……的標誌」，也可以說a symbol of。

a proxy for
經濟學人例句1：
Supercomputers have long been considered a proxy for nationalcompetitiveness in science and technology.
超級計算機長期以來一直是國家科技競爭力的代名詞。
從這句話還可以學到「某方面的競爭力」competitiveness後面跟的介詞是in。
consider「認為」，可以說consider as，不過as也可以不加。
經濟學人例句2：
For better or worse, 5g has become a proxy for superpowerdom.
不管是好是壞，5G已成為超級大國的代名詞。
經濟學人例句3：
If water is a proxy for life itself, it is perhaps not surprising that worries about the health and availability of supplies here on Earth can take on apocalyptic overtones.
如果水是生命本身的代名詞，那麼對地球上水質和水供應量的擔憂會帶著世界末日的意味或許也就不足為奇了。
從這句話還可以學到take on apocalyptic overtones這個表達。
其中，take on是呈現、具有的意思，如柯林斯詞典例句：
In some works, flowers take on a powerful emblematic quality.
在一些作品中，花具有強烈的象徵意義。
Apocalyptic 英 [pklptk] 美 [pɑklptk] 描述（歷史）大動亂的；預示（未來）大災變的；像世界末日的。
overtone弦外之音；言外之意；暗示。
所以，take on apocalyptic overtones含義是「帶著世界末日的意味」。
外刊例句4：
Poor general health was most often reported by those who appear to be struggling or suffering. Poor mental health came second, followed by inequality of income, unemployment and limited social contact, which the authors used as a proxy for loneliness.
身體狀況不佳是受訪者苦苦掙扎或備受煎熬的最主要原因。其次是心理健康狀況不佳，然後是收入不平等、失業和社交有限（報告中將「有限社交」視為孤獨的代名詞）。
從這句話還可以學到表示「次序」的表達，「最主要的」sth be most often reported by；「其次」sth came second；「然後是」followed by。這個是很好的英語寫作和翻譯句型，大家可以記住，平時可以嘗試使用。
這裡，我們需要注意report的用法，這個單詞除了可以作名詞，表示報告，還可以作動詞。
可以表示「公布」，如100元31篇外刊翻譯（課程購買請關注公主號高齋雲課堂）：
FedEx and DHL are expected to report similarly buoyant results next month.
聯邦快遞（FedEx）和DHL預計下月也會公布同樣令人振奮的業績。
Report還可以表示「稱」，在調查報告中很常見，可以引出受訪者說的話或提到的內容，如這句主動的話就是those most often reported poor general health，也就是說這些人提到最多的是poor general health。
所以，如果你想表達「西方國家的年輕人承受著越來越大的壓力」，就可以這樣說：
Young people were increasingly reporting higher stress levels around the western world. （衛報）
