Hi, I'm Vanessa and I'm head of HR.
I'm going to take you through a job interview for the aged disability sector.
I will ask you some common interview questions and I ask that you pause after each one and think about how you'd answer it at a proper interview.
Say your answers out loud to practice what it would be like in a real interview.
You can even record yourself on a phone or a webcam and watch it back to learn where you can improve.
I'll finish up by giving you some tips about what I would expect to hear at a successful interview.
So, let's get started.
Why did you decide on a career in care work?
What do you find rewarding about this job?
Tell me what you feel your greatest skill as a care worker is.
Would you say that you're a team player?
Describe a time where you've had to deal with a difficult work situation.
How did you handle that?
What do you think are the key responsibilities to our clients?
If a dementia client became aggressive, what would you do?
How would you go about ensuring quality of care?
And finally, do you have any questions for me?
So, we're looking for people who are interested in putting back into the community and people that are interested in a job where they can do good.
It's definitely something that's more than a financial aspect to the position.
It's um, looking for people who are rewarded within themselves because they want to give back to other people.
The teamwork is really important in this industry from, um, just communication is a real key issue, um, from being able to report back to the team, a bit of booking appointments for you that you're going to be late for the next client, being able to speak to a range of different people.
with a range of possibly different communication, um, issues with the clients.
Um, so we're really looking for someone who can work with a real range of different people.
A good interviewee knows about the position that they've applied for, um, they answer with good open questions and, um, have done a little bit of research into the organisation because it shows that you're interested in the job.
It shows that you've got a bit of initiative and that you've actually looked up who we are and what we do.
So, if we ask for a question with an example, the sort of structure that we're looking for in an answer is that the scenario that you've been involved in.
Something that shows that you've understood the question and that you've thought through how to go through the different steps involved in the example.
Any other tips for a good interview, um, it's okay to be nervous, um, we're all nervous.
Quite often, we're nervous sitting on the other side of the table as well.
They're new people, um, and avoid fiddling if you can.
So, um, don't play with your rings or your hands or your straps, just keep your hands still or on your lap, um, if you're that sort of prone to that sort of nervous fidget.
