英譯英英語閱讀：《新概念第三冊》L2 Thirteen equals one

Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired. The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.

二、努力「想」和「」用」英語的英語閱讀

我們讀」英語時，努力和儘量不去「想」中文，而是訓練「想」英語的習慣好嗎？

1) Lesson 2 Thirteen equals one

1.If sonething is equal to,or equals something else,it is the same as something else.

英語閱讀的難度在於「能說」這些簡單英語，而不是「我知道中文是什麼」。

2.So, 13 equals 1 means 13 is the same as 1

2) Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another

1.A vicar is someone like a priest,or like a minister in a church.

A vicar is the man in charge of a church.

我寧願「不知道」英語的中文是什麼，也要能「說出」英語 a priest,a minister in a church，這就是「英語閱讀」的意義：因為你到了美國，「只懂」英語，只懂換個詞表達」英語就足夠了，「想」中文是「多餘的」。

2.When we raise money(from the public),we ask them to donate money(to give us small amount of money from each person),and we'll spend this (raised=donated) money fir public good.

「會說」中文「募捐」，卻「不會用」這些英語的「英語閱讀」，讀再多也無效。

3) but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired

1.If we manage to do something,we make it,we succeed in doing it.If you managed to get home after getting drunk,you arrived home.

2.If you try to do something,you may do it but you may fail. If you try to get home after getting drunk,you may get home in the end,or you may drop to the ground and sleep away on your way home.

我不知道我們所謂的「英語閱讀」是以能「說」這樣的英語為「及格」的標準，還是以「我懂英語manage to do中文什麼意思了」為「掌握了」英語的標準。

3.To get enough money here means To raise enough money

估計沒有幾個「英語閱讀」的人會把英語raise money用來理解英語get enough money的，get enough money永遠「指向」的都是「它的中文」：中文是什麼?

這些都是無效「英語閱讀」：既不會「用」英語，也不會「說」英語。

4.If we have something done,we ask someone to do it.

If we do something,we do it ourselves.

So,to have the church clock repaired means to have/ask someone to repair=to fix the church clock.

總結：沒有藉助「不同」英語形成「同樣」的用英語學英語的習慣和能力的英語閱讀，通通都是無效閱讀，即使你「用」中文英譯漢式「閱讀」得再多。
