今天的課堂上，學生有問到mean to do sth和mean doing sth的區別。嚴格講，有mean to do 的說法，沒有mean doing 的說法。之所以後者會出現，是因為上下文的關係。

 

我們先來看看mean to do，這個用法是說「想做某事；意欲做某事」intend to do sth。例句：I don’t mean to hurt you.我不是想傷害你。

 

出現mean doing sth的上下文往往是這樣的：Taking this job means taking a lot of risks. 接受這份工作意味著會遇到很多危險。Mean在此做「意味著」理解，後面的taking a lot of risks是動名詞的短語，如果我用引號就很容易理解了，Taking this job means 「taking a lot of risks」.只是表達的時候，無須用那個引號，我這樣做只是方便我們理解。同樣道理，這個句子用不定式表達也沒問題：To take this job means to take a lot of risks.要點是前後必須一致，不能前面是不定式，後面變成動名詞，反之亦然。
