Tip 20 What makes a good CVA CV (curriculum vitae) is your chance to show what makes you suitable for the job you're applying for.Your CV should tell the reader about your career history and your skils, abilities and achievements. With your CV, an employer may also need a cover letter and a completed application form.
What to include in your CVBecause all jobs are different, you CV should be fiexible. Each job you apply for will need a slightly different CV which is relevant to that particular job. However, there are some sections that all employers will expect to see on your CV.
What you must include on your CVName, professional title (if you have one, e.g. Dr) and contact detailsDon't write CV or Curriculum vitae at the top of the page. Use your name as the title.
Contact details means your email address and phone number(s).A short section below your name and contact details giving the reader an overview of yourself, what you can offer the company, and what your career ambitions are. This should be changed to be relevant to the job you're applying for.If you like, you can also include a link to your professional social media profile in this section but make sure it is up to date.
Experience and employment history This is where you should list your previous jobs, plus any internships and work experience you've had. The most recent job is most relevant so put that first. For each position, you should say:
the dates you worked
the employer
your job title
a summary of the job
Education and qualifications
As with the previous section this should be in reverse order.
Include:
If you have room and it is relevant, you can also include information about:
Key skills you have
Hobbies and interests (make sure they are relevant, e.g. reading doesn't tell the employer anything useful about you)
References listing your referees to the end of a CV is no longer automatic. If you think it is necessary, write 'references available on request".
Don't include:
A photograph (unless you are told to)
Age and date of birth: In some countries such as the UK, it is illegal for employers to ask about age.
Marital status: As with age, it can be against the law for employers to ask about this.
