not only ... but also ... 的用法

一、not only ... but also 是並列連詞，用來連接和強調兩個同等的成分，用來表示令人驚訝或是意料之外的事，而且後者的更為令人驚訝，它可以用來列出形容詞的性質、名詞或動詞，以顯示互補的性質、數量或動作、事件和狀態。，意為「不但...，而且...」，例如：

1、主語 + 動詞 + not only + 形容詞 + but also + 形容詞，例如：

He is not only arrogant but also selfish.

他不僅傲慢，而且自私。

Tom is not only rich but also famous.

湯姆不僅富有而且出名。

She was not only extremely intelligent but also very practical.

她不僅非常聰明，而且非常實際。

2、主語 + 動詞 + not only + 副詞 + but also + 副詞，例如：

John works not only quickly but also efficiently.

約翰不僅工作很快，而且工作很出色。

Thomas writes not only correctly but also neatly.

託馬斯寫得不僅正確而且工整。

He worked not only hard but also carefully.

他不僅努力工作，而且細心工作。

3、主語 + 動詞 + not only + 名詞 + but also + 名詞，例如：

She is not only a novelist but also a poet.

她不僅是小說家，還是詩人。

He is not only a statesman but also a man of the people.

他不僅是一位政治家，而且是一位平民。

Shakespeare was not only a writer but also an actor.

莎士比亞不僅是一位作家，而且還是一位演員。

4、主語 + not only + 動詞 + but also + 動詞，例如：

He not only studies hard but also works well.

他不僅學習努力，而且工作也很好。

She not only plays well but also writes music.

她不僅彈得好，而且還寫音樂。

He not only speaks English but also French.

他不僅會說英語，還會說法語。

The robbers not only took his money but also laid into him.

強盜們不僅搶走了他的錢，還向他下手。

二、為了強調，可將 not only 置於句首，此時其後的句子通常要用部分倒裝的形式，但是 but also 後面的句子不用倒裝，例如：

1、當句中有情態動詞或是 be 動詞時，把情態動詞或 be 動詞提到 not only 後面，例如：

be 動詞：

Not only is he handsome but also intelligent.

他不僅英俊而且聰明。

Not only is he a teacher, but also he is also a poet. 

他不僅是一位教師，而且是一位詩人。 

Not only was it raining all day at the wedding but also the band was late.

婚禮上不僅下了一整天的雨，樂隊也遲到了。

Not only are mothers not paid but also most of their boring or difficult work is unnoticed.母親們不僅沒有報酬，而且她們的大部分枯燥或困難的工作也沒有引起注意。Not only should you be able to speak, but also should you be able to write.Not only will that skill help your resume but also will make you familiar with on-line job recruiting.Not only will they paint the outside of the house but also the inside.2、當句中沒有情態動詞或是 be 動詞時，用 do, does 和 did，例如：Not only did she forget my birthday, but she also didn’t even apologize for forgetting it.Not only did he come, but he saw her. Not only does she speak Spanish, but also she knows how to type. 三、not only … but also … 中一般可以省略 also ，如：Not only is the position of the earth changing but (also) the earth itself is undergoing change. 不但地球的位置在變化，而且地球本身也在經歷著變化。He is famous not only in China but (also) in the whole world. The moves in chess are not only manifold, but (also) involute. 但在連接句子時，有時可見到省略 but 或是 but also 的情形，如：Not only was I tired, I was also cold.
George not only made an important friend, he also learned about the frontier. 省略 but also，句子之間常用分號隔開，例如：
Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. When it comes to pop music we not only lead Europe, we lead the world. These movies were not only making money; they were also perceived to be original.四、not only ... but also ... 中 but 與 also 分離的現象，例如：Air not only occupies space but it also has weight. The poverty of 10 million citizens not only demeans our society but its cost also hobbles our economy. 1,000萬的貧困人口不僅給我們的社會抹黑，而且在這上面的支出也阻礙了我們的經濟發展。五、not only ... but also .... 的替代式常見的還有 not only ... but ... too/as well,  not merely ... but also ..., not just ... but also ..., not … alone … but 等。
not only ... but ... too/as well :He not only washed the car, but polished it too/as well. not merely ... but (also) ... :We are experiencing not merely another turn of the business cycle, but a restructuring of the economic order. 我們正在經歷著的不僅僅是又一輪的商業周期，而是一次經濟秩序的重組。not just ... but (also) ... :
Victims want to see justice done not just for themselves, but for the greater good of society. 受害者希望正義得到伸張，這不僅是為了他們自己，也是為了社會的更廣泛的利益。not … alone … but (also) ... :The enemy in this war is not imperialism alone but also the alliance of the big bourgeoisie and the big landlords. 戰爭的敵人不但是帝國主義，而且是大資產階級和大地主的聯盟。
