Oxymoron \ˌäk-sē-ˈmȯr-ˌän\ 矛盾修辭法
韋氏詞典的解釋是a combination of words that have opposite or very different meanings（意思相反或極不相同的詞構成的組合）。
這個詞由古希臘語的oxys（有尖銳、敏銳之意）和moros（意思是愚蠢，英語moron [傻瓜] 來源於這個詞）組成，本身就是一個矛盾修辭法的應用。
其他例子還有：deafening silence（震耳欲聾的寂靜）、cruel kindness（殘酷的溫柔）等等。
《紐約時報》觀點文章《校園性文化與「五十度灰」》分析了美國大學是如何模糊了性行為與強姦的界線的。作者指出，在派對文化影響下，大學把校園性侵行為定性為「非經雙方一致同意的性行為」，僅僅按有違榮譽規章論處。作者認為，所謂「非經同意的性行為」，就是一種oxymoron，因為性一定是雙方同意的，否則就是強姦——
First, sex implies consent. Without it, sexual activity is not sex but violence. Thus, the very term 「nonconsensual sex」 is an oxymoron.
首先，性就意味著同意。沒有同意，性行為就不是性，而是暴力。因此，這個「非經雙方一致同意的性行為」術語本身就是一個矛盾修辭法。
其實，nonconsensual sex本身就有性別歧視意味，讓女性處於一個被動或低人一等的狀態。
Second, nonconsensual sex suggests that one party engages in sexual activity while the other party gives or withholds consent. In most cases, this means that men engage in sexual activity while women merely consent, and not vice versa.
第二，「非經雙方一致同意的性行為」表明性行為由一方進行，而另一方只是給予或拒絕給予同意。在大多數情況下，這意味著男人從事性行為，而女人僅僅表示同意，反之卻並不成立。
Third, the notion of nonconsensual sex does not take into account power politics that continue to plague gender relations in a context where women are expected to please men.
第三，在女性仍被期待取悅男人的語境之下，「非經雙方一致同意的性行為」這一概念沒有考慮到持續困擾著性別關係的權力政治。
Fourth, the notion of nonconsensual sex simultaneously reveals and disavows that at least one strain of our culture actually values the lack of consent.

作者還對於"性交"與「強姦」兩種行為的差別進行了一番解釋：
While sex is considered an activity, until recently, it commonly referred to an activity shared between people, as in the familiar phrase, 「having sex.」 Implicit in the concept of sex is consent. Without consent, sexual activity becomes rape.
「性」被視為一種行為，直到前不久，它通常是指一種人們共享的活動，類似的短語「進行性行為」也是如此。「同意」隱含在性這個概念當中。未經同意的性行為會成為強姦。
矛盾修辭常見於文學作品中，藉由一種不協調的統一，傳達或輕鬆幽默、或旨趣悠遠的效果。莎士比亞的《羅密歐與朱麗葉》中有這樣的句子——
O heavy lightness！Serious vanity！Misshapen chaos of well-seeming forms！

一連串的矛盾修辭寫盡了羅密歐的內心衝突。
中國詩歌作品中，徐志摩的《贈日本女郎》常被拿來作為oxymoron的例子。詩中這樣寫道——
最是那一低頭的溫柔，
像一朵水蓮花不勝涼風的嬌羞，
道一聲珍重，道一聲珍重，
那一聲珍重裡有甜蜜的憂愁——
