This Summer Holiday I was granted theopportunity to attend the 56th London International Youth Science Forum, the so-called 「science fortnight」, which was mainly held at ImperialCollege London where all the amazing adventures began.
Back in school, I was neither introvert normuch of a talker, but somehow on the first day of the forum, I was encouragedto walk out of my comfort zone and say hi to any strangers. Turned out in thatway I met loads of new friends coming from all over the world with the samepassion for science and through much daily interaction some of us became thebest friends ever during the two weeks.
We had lectures on the most cutting-edgetopics in science from some of the top researchers and professors around theglobe, flying all the way to Londonto pass on knowledge and spirit of science and technology.
Professor Fiona Watt from King’s CollegeLondon, for example, gave us a comprehensive introduction on stem cells andtheir applications in modern medicine. She began by explaining to us what was astem cell , moved on to discuss possible future developing directions of stemcell therapy, then highlighted some of the social issues on the topic(especially the difficulty in clinical trials), and finally wrapped up thelecture by showing us a photo of her lab members whilst reminding us of theimportance of universal endeavor-our theme of LIYSF this year- in scienceadvancement.
Some other lectures were also asinteresting and informative-like 「The Amazing Boron Hydrides」 given by Dr.Michael G.S. Londesborough from Czech Academy of Science. His videos onexperiments of Borane as well as live demonstrations in the lecture room wereso eye-catching and of high quality that together with his humor his lecturewas unofficially rated to be invincible.
But then a few days later Dr. CyrilIsenberg from the University of Kent broke the recordby his lecture on 「Bubbleology」-he introduced the history of bubbles in humanhistory with a half-broken, half-screaming old slide projector, then showed ushow bubbles were able to solve mathematical problems. He dipped all kinds ofmetal structures (with only edges) inside the soap water and created a kingdomof not only normal, colorful bubbles, but also concentric ones. The normalbubbles were able to reach an equilibrium of their surfaces and present us acentral point(or a small surface in some cases) with the shortest total lengthpossible to each vertex. It could have taken us hours to crack a problem likethat, but with bubbles it was only a matter of an instant.
There were, of course, many other interesting lectures and demonstrations, duringwhich there were many surprises for us too. Take the lecture 「To Catch a Comet!」for example, Professor Mark EcCaughrean from the European Space Agency showedus a real rocky-thing (not technically a rock though, because of the densitydifference) from space and it was passed on in the audience for us to touch!Later on, he played a short sci-fi film (of Hollywoodquality!) on comets and planets by ESA, and you couldn’t possibly imagine howsurprised I was to recognize Aidan Gillen from the Game of Thrones.
Aidan Gillen!
I wouldn’t go into details of the rest ofthe lectures since it would probably take days trying to go through each one,as every one of them was unique in its own way.
