The first batch of the second scientific expedition to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, composed of 6 scientific personnel, headed for Mount Everest region and conducted integrated expedition work in terms of atmospheric environment and cryosphere elements, and so on. It marks that the engagement of Tibet in second scientific expedition to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is officially unveiled.
Since entering the region on April 28, the expedition has completed related scientific expedition work like soil micro-organism and seed bank sampling of the region ranging from the altitude from 5200 m to 6050m, research into the correlation between geology and glacier, and GPS positioning of glaciers and glades, and assisted expedition of Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ITPCAS) in atmospheric environment and cryosphere elements observation and monitoring, ice core drilling, etc.
According to the scientist, the expedition will harness new observation approaches, obtain first-hand data, ramp up three-dimensional monitoring research of weather and climate, glacier melting, glade expansion in typical regions, leverage high resolution satellite remote sensing images and data, and conduct research into the coupling relationship between glaciers, lakes and climate change.
It is informed that the expedition will last 40 days, mainly in terms of new snow and snow dune sampling in the region, sampling of frontier and terminal of the glaciers, and will deepen understanding of the atmospheric environment in the region, and provide scientific support for ecological civilization construction in response to climate change and extreme environment.
