MIT Career/Leadership Peer-coaching-#1: Finance Investment track

MIT Club of Shanghai and MIT Sloan Great China Club co-organized an online panel, on October 31, 2020, with a topic of sharing career/leadership development advice by alumni to current students and young alumni members. This was first of a few sessions (please read below for more session info), and we focused on investment banking, finance, venture capital VC/PE, commercial banking, corporate finance, entrepreneurship related topics and careers.

 

        There were over 60 MIT students and young alums participated in this live panel. Alumni community members, include Jay Dong, Yuan Gao, Jessie Liu,  Shawn Shen, Phillip Sun, David Xu, Tian Xu, coming from various industries such as investment banking, VC/PE, FOF, start-ups, angel investment, commercial banking and corporate finance, etc.

 

 

        During the event, panelists first introduced their background and career path. Then they talked about how Coronavirus affected their industries and their future vision. 

        For example, Jessie Liu (MSMS17) in NY talked about how different banks reacted to the pandemic and her thoughts about the future trend; Yuan Gao (MBA03) and David Xu (MBA99) illustrated their views about the difference between investment industry in U.S and China, how VC/PE in China has been developed rapidly in the past 10 years and the future picture of investment industry in China. Followed by that, Shawn Shen (Course 02) and Tian Xu (SF13) shared their advice to students about early career preparation, industry choice and personal development.

 

 

Some highlights during the panel:

-       The panelists mentioned: Investors consider a lot about the people side of entrepreneurs. They look at how entrepreneurs react to challenges, view the industry and communicate with people. Only if entrepreneurs have high adaptivity and communication skills, their firms can be well managed in the long run.

-       The panelists raised advice for students who want to do VC/PE as career: students should actively seek for opportunities to increase domain knowledge about different industries. For example, they can follow the market and reach out to people in the industry to find out the industries they are really interested in and they have core competence in.

 

The session ended with a Q&A session in several breakout rooms to give attendees an opportunity to have a closer conversation with panelists. The Q&A discussion topics ranged from sharing finance and investment insights to career development.

The longest break-out session, below, lasted 3.5 hours, spear-headed by David Xu (MBA99), Philipe Sun (MBA04) and Jay Dong (EMBA16), was filled with hard-learned lessons, laughter, insights and thought-provoking, and perhaps, career-changing ideas😁。

David Xu Managing Partner, Mingxin China Growth Fund

Dr. Xu is the Managing Partner of Mingxin China Growth Fund. He worked at the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs (Hong Kong) from 1999 to 2002; he has been managing venture capital funds since 2003 in China and US. Mingxin China Growth Fund mainly invests in early stage growth companies in health care, clean tech and IT. It has offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Yantai and Palo Alto.

Dr. Xu graduated from University of Science and Technology of China with a bachelor's degree in Biology. He also has a Ph.D. degree in microbiology from Columbia University and an MBA degree from MIT

Sloan School of Management.

現任中銀美國副總裁，負責公司業務拓展部

高源

朗盛投資 合伙人

        高源先生在私募股權投資和企業管理方面有著豐富的行業經驗。加入朗盛之前，高源先生在黑盛控股從事PE和FOF股權投資以及與上市公司和產業資本的戰略合作。他曾在元禾控股投資部擔任總經理, 期間主導在TMT、文化消費和醫療健康等戰略新興產業的投資並在多家高科技企業擔任董事。他曾經在亞美亞通訊和聯想集團等全球500強企業負責業務發展和併購以及戰略聯盟和市場營銷等管理工作。回國前他在美國普華永道為跨國企業提供戰略管理和信息化諮詢。

        高源先生在上海財經大學獲得經濟學士學位, 獲得美國卡內基梅隆大學公共管理碩士和麻省理工學院MBA學位，他目前在上海歐美同學會擔任理事；「2019母基金周刊年度人物評選」 獲評「中國股權投資青年領袖LP-TOP30」

 

沈曉 Shawn

現任富達（Fidelity）一級市場基金董事經理

負責大中華區科技領域私募投資，專注人工智慧、無人駕駛、企業服務、SaaS等領域

此前在美國波士頓諮詢(BCG)，從事科技行業的戰略制定和兼併收購業務

現擔任多個企業的董事會成員

獲得美國麻省理工學院(MIT)碩士學位， 主攻電子工程計算機方向，本科畢業於上海交通大學

Shawn Shen currently leads the Fidelity's VC/PE investment in TMT space in Greater China, with a focus on AI, Autonomous Driving, Enterprise Tech and SaaS, etc. Before that, he worked at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) with a focus on Technology and M&A. He serves on multiple boards of both public and private companies. Shawn received MS from MIT and BS from Shanghai JiaoTong University in EECS

徐湉

Mr. Tian Xu is the co-president of Meta Group. He was the Vice President and Head of Finance at Pinduoduo (Nasdaq: PDD) and led its successful IPO in Nasdaq in 2018. Before PDD, he was Finance Director of Baidu Group as finance head for Emerging Business Group (Globalization/Cloud/Education/Smart City), Technology Group (Data center/ CDN/IS/Security/AI Chip/Quantum Computing), Intelligent Vehicle Group (L3/L4/Internet of Car), and Smart Living Group(Duer OS/Xiaodu). Before Baidu, Mr. Xu was the finance director of Alibaba Group International Division and was in charge of finance strategy for globalization of Alibaba group and building up the global finance teams. He was also the finance leader of Alibaba.com, aliexpress.com, 1688.com, Rural Taobao, Tmall Global and Taobao Overseas. Before Alibaba, Mr. Xu worked for KPMG, ABB and some startups. He has rich experience in internet, AI, ecommerce, big data, cloud computing, logistics, payment, manufacturing and trading. He used to work under multicultural environment in APAC, Europe, Middle East and US.

Mr. Xu is a Chinese CPA and CMA. He got his MBA degree from MIT Sloan, Master Degree from Renmin University of China, and Bachelor Degree from The Central University of Finance and Economics.

Jay Dong

Partner at Kunpeng Healthcare Investment

        He earned an M.B.A (MIT), M.A. (Tufts) and Master of Medicine from Peking Union Medical College (Tsinghua University Faculty of Medicine). He started his career as a researcher and R&D scientist at Tufts University Medical Center and Millennium Pharmaceuticals, then transformed to the commercial side for the next twenty years, worked at Fortune US 500 and private US companies (Becton Dickinson and CST) in the US, Singapore then China, as US Marketing Manager and Asia Pacific Business Manager, and from 2008-2019, in China, as the founding General Manager of  China and General Manager of Asia Pacific region, and Global Vice President of CST.  Co-founder of DIACURATE Diagnostic.

       The founding Co-President of Academia-Industry Consortium on Innovation and Entrepreneurship of China CSCB,  and a co-founder and Secretary General and Vice Chairman of the Committee for Precision Medicine & Companion Diagnostics of Chinese Society of Biotechnology, and an Independent Board Member of Beijing Tri-Prime Gene Pharma. Additional voluntary social responsibilities included board member on a list of non-profit organizations such as BayHelix Group,  Sino American Biomedical and Pharmaceuticals Association(SABPA) and Shanghai American School. 

Philip Sun

Managing Director Pan-Asia Core Equity Sales, Goldman Sachs 

        Philip is a managing director in Pan-Asia Core Equity Sales. He leads the research sales efforts to cover China hedge funds. Philip joined Goldman Sachs as an associate in 2007 and was named managing director in 2015.

 

        Prior to joining the firm, Philip worked in securities at Bank of America and in fixed income at JP Morgan in Hong Kong. Earlier in his career, he worked as a telecom engineer at Ericsson in North America.

 

        Philip serves as the Greater China liaison for The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Club of Hong Kong.

 

        Philip earned a Bachelor of Commerce and an MSc in Computer Science from McGill University, and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
