1,Put on your war face. Modern Combat 5: Blackout is now free-to-play. Up until now, downloading Gameloft’s first person shooter would set you back $3.99 (and prior to that, $6.99 at launch).
If you paid to fight prior to the switch, Gameloft will reward you with Veteran status, which includes unlimited energy and some other bonuses.
Modern Combat 5 product manager Valeriu Ispir explained why the change is necessary in a press release distributed by Gameloft earlier today:
「Ultimately, the switch to free-to-play means the game will have a longer lifetime,」 he said, 「so we can invest more in the long-term update plan and in the servers which need to support a significantly larger player base.」(source:gamezebo.com )
2,If you don’t really follow the business world of mobile, let me give you a brief summary of what it feels like the investment climate is like in Finland for mobile startups: One guy says, 「Hey I』ve got an idea for a mobil…」 at which point they’re interrupted by someone else dumping a figurative dump truck of money on top of them before they can finish their sentence. The up-side of this for us, is that it seems like there’s a never-ending stream of funding for people to do really cool and often totally experimental things- Or at least, this seems to be the case with the just announced Everywear Games.
Details are ultra-vague right now beyond their studio focus of producing simple games designed for smartwatches which are meant to be enjoyed in 5-15 second sessions- Or, as they call it, 「Twitter-sized entertainment.」 It’s great that there’s studios forming specifically to figure this kind of thing out, as we』ve seen a few cool Apple Watch side projects, but no one aside from Everywear Games doubling down on making that their sole focus. They』ve got some big names
behind the company, and an investment team that has had their hands in both the Supercell and Mojang cookie jars.(source:toucharcade )
3,With Let’s Play videos and other content, YouTube has increasingly become a top destination for gamers to learn and share things about their favorite games. By tracking what game franchises are garnering the most views, it’s easy to observe what titles are popular and driving mindshare. Research firm Newzoo, along with Octoly, is doing just that. The latest chart for February reveals that the Minecraft phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down. Minecraft
easily attracted the most attention with more than 4.3 billion views for the month. In fact, Minecraft accounted for 40 percent of all views among the top 20 games on YouTube, and the next closest franchise, GTA, managed only a quarter of Minecraft’s buzz.
Octoly noted that it 「significantly expanded」 its algorithm for tracking YouTube, and as such new titles that were previously untracked made the top 20, including Five Nights at Freddy’s, Garry’s Mod, and RuneScape. Five Nights at Freddy’s (which has been repeatedly topping the mobile charts from App Annie each week) is notable with almost 1 billion views in February on YouTube, only slightly behind the GTA behemoth.(source:gamesindustry.biz )
4,Perfect World Entertainment this week instituted a 「potentially massive」 round of layoffs, according to reports from Massively Overpowered. While the company has not responded to multiple GamesIndustry.biz requests for comment, tweets from former employees painted a grim picture of the situation.
Confirmation of layoffs came from Mark Miller, who tweeted that he had been laid off Monday from Perfect World subsidiary Cryptic Studios, as well as since- deleted tweets from a former Perfect World PR representative that characterized the scope of layoffs as 「a slaughter.」 Massively Overpowered further cited an anonymous Cryptic employee with news that the MMO studio behind Star Trek Online and Neverwinter had laid off 18 people (about 14 percent of its headcount), and made deeper cuts at Perfect World’s Redwood Shores, California location.(source:gamesindustry.biz )
