In popular legend, every pirate flag displayed a skullabovecrossed bones or crossed swords. In fact there was amplevariation, since every crew wanted a unique flag. The firstreference to amodified basic "Jolly Roger" was in 1700, when theFrench privateerEmmanuelle Wynne flew a black flag llished with askull, crossedbones and an hourglass (Henry Every flew a basicskull and crossedbones, though with the skull turned to the side,as early as 1696,on both a red and black flag). It was presumablyalso used beforethe turn of the century, although there is nosurviving evidence. It may also have indicated that the flyer nolonger consideredhimself to be a privateer, and was a full-blownpirate. What isknown is that following 1700, additional emblems onthe basic redor black flag were increasingly associated withpiracy, anddifferent symbols were in turn associated withindividual piratecaptains.
Of these, the most common symbol was the skull, the symbolofdeath. It was also frequently depicted in association withcrossedbones, another death symbol (although only Edward Englandflew the"skull and crossed bones" in it"s pure form. ChristopherCondent"sbanner repeated the same symbol 3 times.) Both signs werecommonly"momento mori" on 16th and 17th century gravestones allover theBritish Isles. Other symbols were complete skeletons, spears, swords, hourglasses, initials, hearts, crossed swords, wingsandraised glasses. In an era where symbolism in art and everydaylifewas commonplace, each had a distinct and immediatelyrecognizablemeaning. Apart from the death association with bones, skeletons andskulls, dancing skeletons meant dancing a jig withdeath, afatalistic reference the flyer didn"t care about his fate. This wasalso the origin of the raised glass symbol ("toastingdeath").Weapons were a portent of slaughter to come, whilehourglasses andwings indicated that time was running out (or flyingaway). Allthese symbols can be found in contemporary allegoricalpaintings ofdeath, or on gravestones.

The symbols were often combined. For instance, ChristopherMoodyused a skull and crossed bones, a raised sword and awingedhourglass. Edward Teach ("Blackbeard") flew a flag depictingahorned skeleton holding an hourglass and a spear next to ableedingheart. In addition to his "ABH/AMH" flag, BartholomewRoberts alsoflew one depicting a pirate holding an hourglass, alongside askeleton clutching a spear. The fatalism in piratesymbolism wasevident, and it probably applied to pirates as well astheirvictims.
National flags were still flown, often in an attempt to showthatthe pirates still wanted to be seen as privateers who onlyattackedthe ships of other nations. If the countries were at peace,or ifthe pirate held no privateering commission, this meant littleornothing. In 1718 Charles Vane flew the English flag from onemastand a black pirate flag from another. In 1720, Edward Englandflewa black flag from his mainmast, a red flag from his foremastandthe English flag from his ensign staff!
Jolly Rogers were rough and ready affairs, run up by apirateship"s sailmaker or any mr of the crew who was handy with aneedle. Many Nassau pirates had their flags made for them by asailmaker"swidow, who accepted payment in brandy.
