Stuck inside his room at an assisted living center, Bob Coleman knew he could not go out in public with the coronavirus spreading. But he could still connect with others by sharing his love for country music over the internet.

He and several other retirees have turned into disc jockeys, or DJs, for a new online radio hour known as "Radio Recliner."

The 60-minute show was launched last month, starting with retirees in middle Tennessee. It has since expanded, with residents of assisted-living centers in Georgia and Alabama taking part in the project. Many jumped at the chance to work as a DJ to ease the loneliness of social distancing rules.

Mitch Bennett serves as Luckie's chief creative officer. He says the idea was to provide a sense of community to older people who have been spending a lot of time alone.

"For this generation, radio was the original social media," Bennett said. "Dedicating a song to someone you love, and having them hear it along with everyone else, is a special way of connecting. It's a great time to bring that feeling back."

Governments around the world are turning to scientific research and technology to fight the coronavirus.

Experts on technology have begun thinking about what life will be like after the virus is defeated. Some are predicting an increase in demand for voice-controlled systems to perform tasks without the need for human touch.

Voice-activated systems such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant have already experienced strong growth in recent years. Experts say the coronavirus crisis could drive even more growth as many people seek technology to replace physical touch.

Jonathan Collins is research director for ABI Research, a service that helps organizations face technology issues.
He says voice-activated systems in homes "can mean avoiding commonly touched surfaces" to control smartphones, televisions, lighting, doors and heating systems.

ABI estimates that shipments for voice control devices for 『smart' home use hit 141 million worldwide last year. It predicts that number could grow by about 30 percent in 2020.

An estimate by Juniper Research showed the number of voice assistants in use for all purposes reached 4.2 billion devices this year. Juniper estimates the number could grow to 8 billion by 2023.

Avi Greengart is a technology expert with market research company Techsponential. He told AFP he expects a wider choice of business uses for voice technologies as companies now face new health and safety concerns.

Julian Issa follows technology for Futuresource Consulting. He notes there had already been rising use of voice assistants since the coronavirus crisis began. But he said most of the increase is likely not driven by people trying to avoid touching surfaces. Instead, more people are using the assistants because they are spending far more time with their devices while staying at home.

Our National Parks journey continues this week in one of the most popular and beautiful places in America: Grand Canyon National Park in the state of Arizona.

The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and one of the largest canyons on Earth. It stretches for 450 kilometers. Parts of the canyon are more than 30 kilometers wide and one kilometer deep.

A look back in time

The canyons of America's Southwest are deep, ancient openings in the Earth. They look as if they formed as the earth split apart.

In reality, rivers formed these canyons.

Forty million years ago, the Colorado River began cutting through the area around the present-day Grand Canyon. The river carried dirt and pieces of stone that slowly ate away at the surrounding rock. It left a pathway of enormous rock openings. At the same time, forces deep within the Earth pushed up the surrounding land.

Humans in the Grand Canyon

Native American occupied the Grand Canyon 3,000 years ago. Bones, hair, feathers and the remains of plants have been found in deep, dry caves high in the rock walls.

The Hopi, the Paiute, the Navajo and other Native American tribes have all been in the area for at least 700 years.

Visiting the Grand Canyon

Depending on the time of day, the sun lights up the rock walls in red, orange, and golden colors. The bright colors are the result of minerals in the rock. Their appearance changes endlessly -- with the light, the time of year, and the weather.

Most people who come to the Grand Canyon National Park visit an area known as the "South Rim." That area has shuttle buses that take visitors to overlooks.
