A guru's guide to balancing academics and sports

Who you are? It takes a long time to find out, getting to know yourself is a process of self-analysisand knowing your strength and weakness.It is not easy to do the self-evaluation. Doing an unbiased self-evaluation might be difficult to analyse. I will leave you here witha little thought of reflection!

Ashutosh's home town is surrounded by hills with incredible beauty. People from his home town are simple yet hardworking. His schooling and interest toward sport has begun from his hometown. There he had a competitive environment to nourish himself and grow stronger in sports as well as in academics. He learned to balance his academics and sports, thereby allowing him to develop an all-rounder personality.

Parents play a pivotal role in establishing and enforcing a structured time after students return home from school. In this regard, Ashutosh was fortunate enough to spend quality timeupon returning home each day.He used to spend his evenings playing sports. As a result of this exposure to sport, he developed an increasing interest in sports and started participating in state and national level tournaments. On the other hand, he preferred to give importance to his academics with thesame degree of zeal.

Interestingly, his passion and interest toward sports provided the impetus for his decision to embark on a career in physical education, this culminated in him pursuing an undergraduate degree in physical education L.N.I.P.E Gwalior, India. During his tenure he had learnt various aspects of physcial education and importantly the role of physical activities in student’s lives. He met experts of the realm of physical education who shared their knowledge and experience.

Upon graduating from university, Ashutosh began working in the field of fitness training, and was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to work within the organizing committee of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Ashutosh then decided to spend several years in the corporate sector, working in the Hyatt group. However, he could never give up his love for sports and fitness and had a strong desire to get involved in the education of adolescents. Consequently, he embarked on a career in high school education, taking up employment at an IB school in India as a physical education teacher. During the six years that he worked at this school, Ashutosh was able to better develop his teaching skills and skills in dealing with the development of adolescents. Since embarking on his high school career, he has never looked back, and continues to be driven to make a difference in the lives of students.

Not only has Ashutosh gained qualifications in the field of education, he has also completed numerous certifications in fitness and sports training and coaching. For example, he holds an ITTF (international table tennis federation) level 3 coaching certification. As a consequence, not only does he demonstrate exemplary teaching skills, but is also well-grounded in the practical aspects of sport coaching at an international level. He believes that he make a difference not only in the classroom, but also in the development of innovative school-wide programs, and to that end, he is currently enrolled in a Master of Educational Management program, through which he hopes to gain strong managerial insights that he can use in eventually becoming an educational leader.

In addition to developing sporting skills across a range of disciplines, Ashutosh also believes that developing an understanding and appreciation for the importance of overall fitness is essential to all adolescents.The current generation of students are growing up in a more sedentary environment, driven in large part due to the overwhelming role that advanced technology plays in their daily lives. In addition to an increased sedentary lifestyle, changes in food habits and how adolescents are learning to cope with stress is having negative consequences on student’s overall fitness and life expectancy outcomes.Ashutosh believes it is important to break this cycle, and to continually demonstrate to students the importance of living a balanced and healthy lifestyle, making sure that they seek to incorporate a healthy level of physical activity and the consumption of a balanced diet in their daily lives.

In a world where academic grades are proving to be the key determinant of the scholarly success of students, in particular, in their ability to gain admission into top-ranking universities, it is very easy to demand of students that they spend an inordinate amount of time studying. However, it is a physical fact of life that a healthy brain requires a healthy body, and that a healthy body requires an appropriate diet and level of physical activity. Therefore, Ashutosh is always keen to instil in students the notion that no matter how much time they dedicate to study, without the appropriate level of activity and diet, they will never be able to reach their full scholarly potential. He is therefore a firm believer in the notion that extracurricular activities, rather than playing a detrimental role in academic success, afford students a chance to improve their overall academic performance when they are incorporated into the daily lives.
