考點辨析 the number of ，a number of
(1) the number of意為「……的數量」，後面接可數名詞的複數形式。做主語時，中心詞是 number，而不是of後面的複數名詞，故謂語動詞應用單數形式。
The number of cars we need is 20.
我們需要的汽車數是20輛。
(2) a number of意為「若干；很多」，相當於many，其後接複數名詞。 number前面可以用 large/ great/ small 等修飾。此短語做主語時，謂語用複數.
