這三個詞都用在只有兩個人或物的情況下，都不能與不可數名詞連用；但都可用作名詞性代詞，也都可用作形容詞性代詞。Both表示「兩者都」，either表示「兩者中的任何一個」，neither表示「兩者都不」。
（一）both的用法
Both意為「兩者都」，可以單獨使用，也可作定語，還可構成下面的短語：
「both+(of+)the」或「指示詞或物主代詞+複數名詞」，這一短語中的of可以省略；但在「both+of+人稱代詞賓格」這一短語中of不能略去。
1）作定語（這時可以說是限定詞）
You can’t ascribe the same meaning to both words.
不要認為這兩個詞的意思是相同的。
A man’s story is no story,hear both sides.
兼聽則明，偏信則暗。
Both (her) children are at college.
（她的）兩個孩子都在上大學。
The judges awarded both finalists equal points.
裁判員判定決賽雙方分數相同。
2）作主語
She has two brothers;both joined the army.
她有兩個兄弟，他們都參軍了。
Both of my parents travel abroad each year.
我的父母每年都出國旅遊。
There was a strange fatality about their both losing their jobs on the same day.
他們兩人同一天失去工作，真是天意叵測。
3）作賓語
I』ll borrow both of them.
兩個我都借。
Why not do both ?
為什麼兩件事不都做？
If you pay for both of us now,we can settle up later.
你要是先付清咱們兩人的帳，時候咱們倆再細算。
It’s a pity the two concerts clash;I wanted to go to both of them.
真可惜兩場音樂會時間上有衝突，我本來想兩場都去。
4）作同位語
He and I have a common interest:we both collect stamps.
我和他有共同的愛好：我們都集郵。
We can only reach agreement if we both put our cards on the table.
我們雙方只有彼此坦誠才能達成協議。
They both wanted to use the car,so they did a deal.
他們雙方都想用這輛汽車，因此達成了折中的協議。
（二）either的用法
1）作定語（這時可說是限定詞）
Keep either one of the forms.
兩張表格保留哪一張都行。
You can take either cake.
你可以任選一塊蛋糕。
You can park on either side of the street.
在街道的哪一邊停車都可以。
In either event,I』ll be there to support you.
無論這樣或那樣，我都會支持你。
2）作主語
Either (of these) would do.
（這兩個）哪一個都行。
Either of the plans is equally good.
兩個計劃一樣好。
Take one of the books on table-either of them will do.
從桌上這兩本書中拿一本-哪一本都可以。
3）作賓語
I did not bring either with me.
兩個我都沒帶。
I don’t want to owe anything to either of you.
我不想欠你們兩人中任何一人的情。
I』ve bought two cakes-you can have either.
我買了兩塊蛋糕-你要哪一塊都行。
A little government and a little luck are necessary in life,but only a fool trusts either of them.
生活中必定會有走運的時候，也有受限制的時候，但只有傻瓜才只信其一。
He doesn’t resemble either of his parents.
他既不像母親也不像父親。
（三）neither的用法
1）作定語
Neither answer is correct.
兩個答案都不對。
In neither case was a decision reached.
對這兩種情況都未做出決定。
Neither one of us could understand German.
我們倆沒一個懂德語。
2）作主語
Neither was satisfactory.
二者都不令人滿意。
Neither of these words is correct.
兩個詞都不對。
I tried on two dresses,but neither fits me.
我試了試兩套套裙，但是哪一件都不合身。
3）作賓語
I like either.
我兩個都不喜歡。
I chose neither of them.
兩個我都不要。
I could answer neither of the questions.
兩個問題我都答不上來。
4）作同位語
I hope that you neither of you will be so stubborn any more.
我希望你倆都別再這麼倔強了。
These two books neither of them are interesting.
這兩本書都不太有趣。
（四）neither和either的比較
1）這兩個詞都可用作名詞性代詞或形容詞性物主代詞：可以獨立作句子的成分，如主語、賓語、表語、定語等
2）neither表示兩者均被否定，意為「兩者都不（的）；兩者中無一（的）」；either表示肯定，意為「（兩者中）任一個」
I know neither his teachers.=I don’t know his teachers either.
他的兩位老師我都不認識。
He will agree to neither plan.= He will not agree to either plan.
兩個計劃他都不會同意。
3）neither和either除上述不同之外，其他用法完全相同
（五）both與each比較
1）each表示「一分為幾」，both表示「合二為一」
Each of us won a prize。
我們每人都得了一個獎。（即一人一獎）
Both of us won a prize。
我們倆都得了獎。（即一人一獎或二人共得一獎）
2）both相當於名詞時含複數概念
In this dictionary both spellings are shown when both are possible.
在兩種拼法皆可時，本詞典將之一併列出。
3）each相當於名詞時含單數概念
I had some crazy dreams last night.Each was funnier than the last.
昨天夜裡我做了幾個怪夢，一個比一個可笑。
4）each用作複數名詞或代詞的同位語時，謂語須與主語一致，用複數動詞
They each have beautiful gardens.
他們都有漂亮的花園。
