Learning from TED 1

Learning Success for Everyone, not a utopia, not a nice to have , but a social imperative

Step 1 Get meaning, Step 2 Get expression, Step 3 Take out my understanding and reflection,

Summary in English

The speaker talks about the concept and the feasibility of Mastery-based learning. He explains that the failure in learning is not something branded into a person’s DNA. Instead, the gaps in each learning stage lead up to the final failure and disengagement. Although individualized learning, adaptive exercises, on-demand tests have long been proved very effective for individual success, they were limited to a small scale. But, in the age of information, they can really be put into a large scale practice. In the new era, the 100 percent successful learning is possible for everybody, which is not a 「nice to have」 but a social imperative.

Reflections about Day 35 「What adults can learn from kids by Adora Svitak」

The progress of humanity lies in the breakthrough made by the younger generation. So we shouldn’t impose our limitations on our kids to restrict their imagination, and underestimate their abilities. The girl speaker is right we should learn about and from children. Some abilities are enhanced but many are lessened or fade away with our growing up.

Day 37和Day 38 迎來了Sir Ken Robinson的震撼演講: 「Do schools kill creativity?」; 「Bring on the learning revolution」。 Day 38 「Bring on the learning revolution」的內容中最打動我的一句話是「Human flourishing is not a mechanical process but an organic process.」---「人類的成長不是一個機械的製造過程而是一個機體的生長過程」家庭氛圍、父母的態度、父母的生活習慣、父母的學習習慣就像植物生長的土壤和氣候對孩子的成長起著至關重要的作用,流水線上的產品不僅千篇一律,更可怕的是由於材料與生產線不匹配而造成不能物盡其用或者誤用,光鮮靚麗的外表也可能從裡面產生了裂痕,所以我認為做敏感用心,寬嚴相濟的父母對於「亞歷山大」的孩子們尤為重要。在Day 38 Bring on the learning revolution的TED學習中我寫下如下反思:

Reflections about Day 38 Bring on the learning revolution

Sir Ken Robinson’s speech makes me fall into pondering over the contrast between industrial education model and agricultural education model. The former one we have long been thinking of as more systematic, complete and efficient than the traditional private education. Humongous as it is, there exist many problems, especially when there is fierce competition for entering kindergarten and when college education may start from kindergarten. The sentence impressed me most is 「Human flourishing is not a mechanical process but an organic process.」 The well-tended and flourishing plants need diligence, intelligence, patience, persistence and love, while the products on the assembly line are often made by careless hands and numb hearts.
