2014年3月，英國央行發布了一份題目為《現代經濟中貨幣如何創造》研究論文，英國央行報告中兩幅圖很好地解釋了銀行是如何運營的。

銀行創造出貨幣，如果你想獲得抵押貸款，銀行首先確認你的信譽是否良好，把你所需要的金額存入帳戶，這些錢成為了銀行負債，你擁有的抵押貸款是銀行的資產。

圖2.從客戶角度貨幣是如何創建的。

在你取出貸款之前，銀行有一定的儲備，還有少量是來自客戶存款或負債。你從銀行取錢，銀行不動儲備，而是創造了新貨幣，給你貸款或以負債形式，你必須為銀行存款。你從銀行得到了貸款，你必須要給銀行存入更多的錢。

現代經濟中，銀行最賺錢的方式是貸款。我們通常認為貸款是來自銀行存款，其實這是誤解，每一家銀行在貸款同時，其實是創造了新的貨幣。通常情況下，央行不會修正貨幣流通量，央行也並不是根據存款多少發放成比例發放貸款，商業銀行貸款來自新增貨幣，並且沒有限制，這樣做是保持銀行體系的盈利，個人或企業受到了貸款，同時要償還債務。英國央行的目標是確保新增貨幣相對於通貨膨脹率保持一致，通常情況下，英國央行通過設定利率來調整央行儲備與貨幣政策，當利率處於低位，新增貨幣仍沒有達到央行貨幣政策的經濟目標，一個可能是央行進行了一系列資產購買，比如量化寬鬆QE，量化寬鬆就是為了提振經濟而進行了債券購買，主要來自非銀行金融公司，希望通過高收益資產來平衡投資組合，提高資產價格，用資產來刺激消費。

常見誤解：

第一，大部分人認為公眾持有的錢來自銀行存款，貸款是儲戶的存款，其實，銀行貸款並不是來自儲戶存款，而是來自貨幣創造。例如，企業融資或投資，個人購買房子，從銀行貸款，這部分貸款來自銀行新增貨幣。

第二，央行儲備必須符合「貨幣乘數」方法，銀行儲備必須具有約束力，而其實是央行來決定儲備量。貨幣乘數理論只是在教科書中，央行儲備通常是根據利率來設置。
