2月8日，泰護國黨提名現國王哇集拉隆功的姐姐烏汶叻(Ubolratana Mahidol)為該黨總理候選人，參與即將於3月24日舉行的泰國近5年來首次大選。不過，當日晚間，國王哇集拉隆功就發表聲明稱，王室成員不適合擔任政治職務，烏汶叻公主的總理候選人提名與憲法精神不符。次日，泰護國黨發表聲明，表示將遵從國王命令，並取消了原定於9日舉行的選舉活動。
公主本人也通過社交媒體Instagram發貼，感謝支持者「在過去一天中」的「愛與善意」，希望泰國「向前邁進」。

In an Instagram post on Saturday, the princess did not directly mention her brother or her political hopes, but thanked supporters for their "love and kindness towards each other over the past day" and expressed gratitude for their support for her.

Born in 1951, Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi is the oldest child of Thailand's beloved late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
出生於1951年，烏汶叻是泰國先王蒲美蓬的長女。
She attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and after marrying an American in 1972, she gave up her royal title. After her divorce she returned to Thailand in 2001 and once again started participating in royal life.

Ms Ubolratana is one of the more colourful members of the royal family. She has starred in movies, sung on stage with a top Thai pop group, and is flamboyantly fashionable. She portrays herself as more down-to-earth and accessible than other royals.

She was known to be a favourite of her father, the late King Bhumibol, with whom she used to sail in the Gulf of Thailand.
