因為詞義相近，很多人分不清 later 與 after，ago 與 before，要搞清楚他們的區別，關鍵得看用法。
1. later 與 after 最大的區別應該是：after 可以做連詞，引導時間狀語從句，而 later 只是個副詞。
（1） 時間段 + later：常用於過去，表示「稍後、......之後」
A few minutes later, the the boss came in with my bag.
幾分鐘之後，老闆拿著我的包進來了。
later 也可以單獨用，表示「從現在開始的以後」
I will tell you later. 我以後會告訴你的。
（2）after+時間點、時間段都可以, 多用於過去
After 2 o'clock, they started to climb.
兩點過後，他們開始攀登。
After so many years in the US, he has changed a lot.
在美國生活多年之後，他變了很多。
You mustn't come home after 10:30.
你不準十點半之後才回家。
（3）after 可以引導從句，later 不能。
After she had mixed flour with water, the children came home.
她用水和好面之後，孩子們回來了。
2. ago 和 before 的最大區別就是：ago 用於一般過去，before 用於完成時。
( 1 ) ago 常用於過去：
Tom's grandpa came to live with him two years ago.
Tom 的爺爺兩年前來和他住在了一起。
但 since ... ago，照樣要用完成時，因為since 表示「自從...以來」
He has lived in Beijing since 10 years ago.
他從十年前開始就生活在北京。
（2）before 常用於完成時，也可用作介詞。
Have you ever been to Paris before.
你以前去過巴黎嗎？
before+ 幾點幾分，表示在「幾點幾分之前」
You must be home before 10:00.
你十點必須到家。
