小時候,凌友何在家長的要求下,開始學習鋼琴,枯燥乏味的練習,打卡式的出勤,讓凌友何苦不堪言,漸漸失去了對鋼琴的熱情和自信。如果說之前鋼琴因為興趣索然而放棄了,那麼7年級走進音樂教師的那一刻,才算是真正開啟了音樂的世界大門。時任中學部音樂老師Mr Pachak-Robie是凌友何的音樂領路人,在一次家長會的見面中,Mr Pachak-Robie問到凌友何父母,要不要讓孩子嘗試著學習學習樂器?彼時,凌友何已經脫離音樂道路很多年,頗為擔心的媽媽介紹了小時候學習鋼琴的失敗經歷,而Mr Pachak-Robie的一句話卻點燃了媽媽的希望「那就讓他來試一試吧,每一種樂器都試一遍,總會有喜歡的。」
在Mr Pachak-Robie老師的鼓勵下,凌友何再一次走進了音樂教室,管弦、貝斯、吉他……如魚兒遨遊大海,第一次了解貝斯的凌友何開始了全新的音樂之旅。由排斥到熱愛,他開始把音樂當作溝通世界的語言,去用音符來表達自己的情緒和對世界的看法,也日益自信,成長為一名自信從容的海嘉少年。
重新愛上音樂的凌友何身上,有著對於音樂更多元化的認識和熱情,他的熱情也吸引了一群同樣愛好的海嘉音樂愛好者們,於是乎,一個名為「Shrimps N' Bananas」的樂隊就這樣誕生了,同時,凌友何也加入了「Cheese」爵士樂隊。

國際知名貝斯手Victor Wooten(維克特-伍騰) 是凌友何的偶像,Victor Wooten(維克特-伍騰)認為音樂就是一種語言,接觸音樂不應該是從樂理學習、理論開始而是從樂感出發,培養其對音樂自然的觸感。這一理論也深深影響著凌友何對於音樂的理解。IGCSE音樂課程環節,剛開始缺乏樂理基礎的凌友何頗有些焦慮,然而在和Mr Pachak-Robie的幾次溝通、請教後,凌友何也越來越自信。新領域的不斷擴展開啟的多元世界,深深吸引這他。把重心放在音樂身上,在媽媽看來,青春期的凌友何比其他孩子更加順利,沒有親子矛盾,和諧溝通,在媽媽看來,音樂的魅力讓凌友何從容順利的過渡青春期。為了更好地培養自己的樂感,凌友何在IB選課階段也選擇音樂,並且是作曲方向。雖然IB課程期間課業非常繁重,他還是會興致勃勃地去思考和研究。

凌友何音樂原創曲目
在校園的各項活動中獻藝助陣,到各個學校參與活動、交流。用音樂表達自我,用音樂傳遞愛。在沉浸於音樂世界的同時,凌友何也把「愛」的元素融入到音樂之中。「慈善義演」讓這個音樂少年走的更遠。有著多年排球隊隊長內訓籌備安排、地理競賽活動安排經驗的凌友何自然而然也承擔了樂隊「大管家」的職責。
從海嘉的校園,到各個國際學校的活動,從順義區到頤堤港酒吧、三裡屯酒吧,以音樂為媒介,把愛傳遞給更多的人。在承擔貝斯手角色的同時,凌友何還承擔了樂隊的各項溝通、聯絡、後勤的工作。「讓一起玩音樂的人更加開心。」是凌友何心中的堅持。2-3小時無休息的演出,慈善演出背後繁瑣的籌備、溝通,周邊衍生創意不停的想法……面對一系列的籌備、付出,凌友何的身上仿佛有著使不完的勁兒。是什麼讓他能夠如此執著呢?
我想那便是對於音樂的熱愛吧!
喜歡音樂就要選擇音樂專業嗎?不,有著雙面性格的凌友何在學業上卻有著自己不一樣的追求。在凌友何看來,音樂和數學都是他溝通世界的語言,音樂是他感性的筆觸,而數學則是他理性的思考。
不同於大眾對於數學只是公式的傳統認識,凌友何在很小的時候,就得益於學校的課程對數學有著自己的認識。小的時候,參與學校的各項活動,凌友何就認識到了數學是可以用來解決生活中各類實際的問題,比如測量建築、面積的大小,計算超市運營的各項成本。
進入IB課程體系,凌友何對於數學有了全新的認知。每一次和數學老師溝通數學理論和解決問題的方法時候,數學老師Mr.Naysan Naderi也會給到凌友何啟發式的思考,這也為凌友何選擇數學打下了基礎。IB經濟學課程是凌友何探索數學的新開始,但和他期待的以數學論證、數據為基礎去拓展新知的想法不同,高中階段的經濟學主要構成還是理論和圖標居多。為了彌補這一不足,凌友何開始在進一步擴展對於經濟學的探索,「中美智慧型手機行業市場結構差異」是凌友何為自己選定的課題,在研究這一課題的時候,凌友何閱讀、查找了大量數據,凌友何更加堅定了經濟學研究要以真實、大量數據作為理論基礎的理念。而後期IB微積分理論的學習則更加讓凌友何愛上了他曾認為枯燥乏味的數學課堂。
在申請學校的時候,選擇「經濟」還是「數學」,曾經是一個困擾凌友何的問題。
不依託於校外的申請機構,在申請大學的時刻,凌友何全程在校內升學老師的指導下進行。10年級的時候,凌友何就有了自己的規劃,時任凌友何數學老師的Naderi老師也給到了凌友何很多幫助,因其本身是數學專業出身,凌友何也時常去請教Naderi老師大學期間的感受和心得。一位學長的親身經歷也給到凌友何更加全面的升學規劃,「前期打下紮實的數學基礎,後期可以更有優勢的選擇經濟、數學甚至更多」於是,凌友何非常理性地為自己選定了數學專業。
申請大學,凌友何考察更多的是其所在學校的專業實力,比如紐約大學和華威大學,都是數學類排名靠前的院校。因為早在10年級就定好的專業,凌友何在IB選課上也更加從容,「選專業-IB選課-選學校」在申請時候遵循這一順序,他也建議學弟學妹們在IGCSE階段最好就確定下來,後續相關IB選課也會更加得心應手。

「通過微積分,我能夠設想出各類無法解決的問題的全新解決方案。而這些在這之前,即使是最瘋狂的頭腦風暴也是無法解決的。數學的邏輯和概念為解釋我們的世界提供了無限的可能性。……我震驚的發現,經濟與數學的密切關係,只有進一步探索數學知識,才能夠更加清晰的解讀它們之間的邏輯關係。申扎於數字論證,才能得出理論。」
在申請大學的時候,凌友何這樣寫下了他對於數學的熱愛,而這份熱愛也深深地打動著招生官們。在採訪結束的第二天,在原有的多倫多大學、杜倫大學的基礎上,凌友何又收到了紐約大學的offer。
回憶起來到海嘉的十二年,仿佛還在昨天,媽媽依舊還清晰的記得6歲的凌友何第一次走進海嘉的情形。
08年,6歲的凌友何面臨一年級入學的問題,頗有遠見的父母,早早規劃了凌友何走雙語國際學校的路線。綜合考慮距離、課程設置、學校考察,兩所雙語學校納入了凌友何父母的考慮範圍,海嘉便是其中之一。探校過程中,父母帶著小凌友何分別走訪了兩所院校,而進入海嘉的那一刻,凌友何便被海嘉的校園溫馨的設置和好玩的設施所吸引了。
入學海嘉後,隨著凌友何的逐漸長大,英文的比重也越來越大。放心不下孩子學習情況的媽媽申請了旁聽外教的課堂。平時看似不善溝通表達的外教老師,在面對孩子們的時候卻展現了完全不一樣的一面,活力四射的課堂,熱絡的師生互動,老師們像是有「魔法」一樣,引導著孩子們沉浸在英文的世界裡,小小年紀的凌友何在班級裡不亦樂乎。
於是乎,媽媽放心了,一個少年在海嘉的故事也就這樣開啟了。
沉浸在海嘉雙語的環境中,凌友何在中英文閱讀方面的都有著很大的優勢,在媽媽看來,凌友何的成長完全達到了雙語沉浸的目標。在IB選課中,凌友何成為學校為數不多的中文A、英文A(即中英文皆作為母語語言進行學習)的學生,並且取得了良好的成績。

12 years in BIBA, a dozen of college offers
Long hair to the shoulders usually gives boys a non-conventional image of someone who has fallen into idleness. However, in the case of Anthony (Ling Youhe), who successfully gained offers from New York University, University of Toronto, Durham University and other universities, it brings new interpretations.

Anthony combined his love for music and math while planning for college applications. With the success of rolling in a dozen of offers, he clarifies: 「Music and math are two languages for me to learn about the world.」
At first sight, Anthony’s handsome, unrestrained look with his shoulder-length hair is quite noticeable. Perhaps because he plays music, he is uninhibited in his appearance, and radiates a strong and enthusiastic personality. Being a Gemini, he enjoys the sensual pleasure brought by music, and constantly explores the rational paradise of math. The twelve years』 growing up in BIBA empowered Anthony with a distinguishing character as well a clear direction in his pursuit of life.

Not following the traditional suite, drop the piano and pick up the bass
Regained confidence through encouragement and love
In his childhood,Anthony started to learn piano at the request of his parents. The boring drill and miserable attendance gradually lost Anthony’s enthusiasm and confidence. Years after having dropped the piano due to lack of interest, the then seventh grader was led through the front door to the music world.
At that time, Mr. Pachak-Robie (well known as Mr. P.) was teaching music in the Middle School. During a parent-teacher meeting, Mr. P. asked Anthony's parents if they would like their child to learn musical instruments. The worried mother recalled the failure of piano learning, but Mr. P's words ignited the mother's hope: 「Try everything, and there must be something that works. "
Encouraged by Mr. P, Anthony once again walked into the music world, orchestral, bass, guitar ... As a fish returning to the sea, Anthony started a new music journey of exploring the bass for the first time. From rejection to falling in love, he began to use music as a language to communicate with the world, expressing his emotions and perceptions with increasing confidence.
Music safeguards smooth adolescence transition
Anthony fell in love with music again and developed a more diversified understanding and enthusiasm for music which also attracted a group of BIBA music lovers with the same hobbies. Thus, the band named: 「Shrimps N' Bananas」 took off. Anthony also put himself in the "Cheese " jazz band. He idolizes the internationally renowned bass player Victor Wooten who believes that music is a language, and one’s exposure to music should not start from the study of music theory, but from the feel of music. Natural interaction with music should be cultivated. This understanding also deeply influenced Anthony's approach to music. In order to nurture his musical sense, Anthony began to try composing music. In the IGCSE music course, Anthony was caught up in anxiety due to lacking the foundations of music theory.
After consultations with Mr. P., Anthony regained his confidence. He was deeply attracted by the diversified music world. In the eyes of his mother, Anthony sailed through adolescence more smoothly than his peers without too much parent-child conflict owing to the help of music.
With devotion, give it all
Through performing in various school activities on campus and in other schools, Anthony incorporated "love" into the music and the "Charity shows". With years』 experience of preparing for training as the captain of the school volleyball team and arranging for geographical competition activities, Anthony naturally assumed the responsibility as the band's "chief butler".
From the BIBA campus to various international schools, from Shunyi District to INDIGO bars and Sanlitun bars, the band served as a messenger to spread love to more people. As the bass player in the band, Anthony also undertook the work of correspondences, liaison and logistics. His belief of : "enjoy music together and have more fun" fueled his impetus, enthusiasm and momentum to carry on through all the two to three hours of performance without rest, cumbersome preparations, communication behind the charity performances, and the continuous brainstorming... It must be the love of music that makes him so persevering.

Should he study music a major as he is already so devoted? Anthony who has two seemingly opposing sides to his personality, has a different pursuit in his studies. To him, music and math are his languages to communicate with the world. Music articulates the emotions, and math speaks to his rational thinking.
Math embarks ground breaking

Unlike following the stereotype of math being just a formula, Anthony benefited from BIBA's own approach to math teaching. In his early school years, diversified school activities enabled Anthony to realize that math can be used to solve various practical problems in life, such as the measuring of buildings and areas, and calculating a supermarket’s running costs.
Anthony developed a new understanding of math in his IB studies. Every time he communicated math theories and problem-solving methods with the math teacher, Mr. Naysan Naderi would also give him a heuristic approach to thinking, which laid the foundation for Anthony ’s choice of math. The IB economics course was a new beginning for Anthony to explore math. Unlike the expected idea of expansion of new knowledge being based on mathematical argumentation and data, the main components of economics in high school are mostly theories and icons. In order to make up for this shortcoming, Anthony began to further expand the exploration of economics and selected "Differences in the market structure of the Chinese and American smartphone industries" as a research subject. With broad reading and data compilation, Anthony confirmed that mathematical economics research should be based on both authentic and large amounts of data. In the later IB calculus theory study, he fell in love with the math he once thought unattractive.
Explore the new world through calculus
When applying for colleges, Anthony's choices of "economics" or "math" was once again a problem that plagued him. Without referring to external agencies, he went through all the application process under the guidance of the school University Counsellor and also consulted the math teacher Mr. Naysan Naderi. A BIBA alumni’s personal experience gave Anthony a more comprehensive picture for further studies. "A solid foundation in math in the early stages of school can lead to a better position later to choose economics, math, and more... 」, thus math was an anchor for all his applications.
"Through calculus, I was able to conceive new solutions to all kinds of unsolvable problems. Before this application, even the craziest brainstorms could not achieve the same results. The logic and concepts of math provided an explanation for our world’s unlimited possibilities ... I was shocked to find the close relationship between economics and math. Only further exploration of mathematical knowledge can more clearly interpret the logical relationship between the two. Theories are drawn by certifying of data. "
When applying for university, Anthony wrote down his love of math in a way which deeply moved the admission officers. On the second day after this interview, Anthony received an offer from New York University apart from those from The University of Toronto, Durham University and more.

Twelve years at BIBA,
a journey of love
In retrospect of the time spent at BIBA, his mother still clearly remembered the moment when the six-year-old Anthony first walked onto the campus. In 2008, Anthony’s far-sighted parents had planned for his education to be taken in a bilingual school. After comparing the distances between home and school, curriculum and school visits, BIBA was one of the two final choices. On arriving at BIBA, Anthony was immediately attracted by the welcoming atmosphere and fun ground facilities on campus. He joined BIBA.
While studying at BIBA, Anthony gradually moved up the ladder to more classes taught in English. The concerned mother came to observe one class taught by foreign teachers. Those teachers who normally seemed quiet and not very expressive revealed a completely different aspect in front of the children. Like magicians, teachers guided the children to immerse themselves in the English world. The little Anthony was so happily engaged in the dynamic class that the mother felt relieved. From then on, he has been on a journey of growth in the loving BIBA family.
Expressing himself with a perceptual perspective, and examining the world with a rational view, Anthony enjoys a perfect combination of music and numbers. The musical boy didn’t appear to be treading on the "right path", yet the truthfulness and uniqueness in his character reveals the most precious qualities of human kind. Even when faced with the pressures of conservative society, Anthony has remained a free spirit.
