The invention of the bar code
Do you know anything about the invention of the bar code(條形碼)?
A small food store owner found it was difficult to keep records of the product Information. In 1948, he asked the Drexel Institute of Technology to solve this problem. Bernard Silver, a graduate student, was interested. He and his friend Norman Joseph Woodland started to work on it. Soon, they invented their first working system(系統).
The system did work at first, but it was very expensive and sometimes the system didn't work well. If the invention was to become popular in stores, the problems had to be solved. Finally , Woodland solved
the problems.
The patent(專利權) for the bar code system was asked for by Silver and Woodland in 1949, but it was not given until 1952. Although this patent was given,
the system was still not popular among store owners.
In 1970, a business named Logicon Inc. invented the Universal Grocery Products Identification Code(食品工業統一碼). Marsh's Supermarket in Troy was the first store to set up this bar code reading system. It has become very popular ever since, and now it's used in all types of stores all over the world.
E-readers
Have you got an e-reader(電子閱讀器)? Are you thinking of getting one? We asked some e-reader owners to give us their opinions.
There are many things that people like about
e-readers. 「E-readers are really light, weighing less than most paper books," said Nathan Jones,a market researcher. 「You can't hold the book and turn the pages with one hand. An ereader is more comfortable to read in bed or on a sofa.」 Another big advantage is that you can store hundreds of books on them.
「E-readers are perfect for travel, too," said Kiera Smith. The search functions (搜索功能)are also popular. 「You can look for a character by its name. That's really useful," said Megan Malone, a salesman.
One user liked the function for increasing font(字體) size. 「I've got poor eyesight," explained Harvey, an engineer. 「But the e-reader is perfect for me as I can increase the font size." And Jennifer Saunders said, "I like e-readers because they're environmentally friendly. If we buy an e-book, we're helping to save trees as it doesn't use paper." "Best of all is that there are hundreds of free books online. And they're all free to download," said another user.
But some people don't like e-readers. One of the biggest disadvantages is that peoplecant find certain titles. 「If you want an older book or not a best seller, it won't be found --at least that was my experience," said Daisy Madison, an estate agent(房地產經紀人). Others complained about the small(稍微有些延遲) in turning pages.
So, what do you think?
