Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Youth means a temperamental predominance
temperamental的意思是「容易激動的、性情的」，這也是年輕人的特性之一；predominance的意思是「主導地位、佔優勢」。也就是說：青春意味著一種性情上的優勢。
什麼樣的優勢呢？
of courage over timidity,勇氣高過怯懦，
緊接著是一個同樣的結構：
of the appetite for adventure 對於冒險的嗜好
appetite除了有「食慾」的意思，也有「欲望、嗜好」的意思。
over the love of ease.高過對於安逸的熱愛。
這句話比較難，我們再來完整看一遍：

more than a boy of 20.多於在一個20歲的小夥子身上。
boy這個詞，除了可以表示「男孩」，也可以表示「男青年、小夥子」。
一個20歲的小夥子，因為閱歷有限，本身就應該是初生牛犢不怕虎、牴觸安逸找刺激的性格，這沒什麼好奇怪的。但是如果一個人年過花甲，還是一副生龍活虎、一往無前的樣子，這就著實有點老頑童的可愛了。而這樣的人，也更配得上「青春」二字的真諦，因為他更加明白青春和年齡無關的道理。
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. 沒有人僅僅是隨著歲月而變老。
We grow old by deserting our ideals. 我們變老的原因，是因為拋棄了自己的理想。
Years may wrinkle the skin, 歲月可能會讓（我們的）皮膚長出皺紋，
but to give up enthusiasm 但是去拋棄自己的熱情
wrinkles the soul. 會讓靈魂長出皺紋。

Worry, fear, self-distrust憂慮，恐懼，自我懷疑
bows the heart 彎曲了心靈
and turns the spirit back to dust. 並且讓精神變回了塵土的模樣。
《聖經》記載，上帝用塵土造人，並將靈氣吹進了人的鼻孔，人才有了「靈性」，也就是「精神」。而如果一個人被各種悲觀的想法所束縛，缺乏活力和靈性，就和沒有生命的塵土無異，自然也就談不上擁有「青春」。
