As working moms we know all about juggling home, family, and of course, the kitchen. The Mamas of Nanjing community is composed of women with a wide variety of lifestyles. Some stay at home and some work outside, but whatever our situation, it’s important to us, as moms, to be able to have reliable and convenient ways to feed our families. This is why we are so excited to share a new online grocery store, based out of Shanghai (but delivers nationwide), that can help meet our needs.
A Nanjing Based mom, and Chef in her own right, Alena, has kindly invited us into her home to show us how she created two amazing dishes with products from Epermarket.
Alena is from Vladivostok, Russia whos lived in Nanjing for 14 years.
How long have you been baking and cooking?
I started cooking and baking when I was in school. Since 5th grade we had a subject at the school where teacher taught us how to make some simple dishes. The first thing I baked was an apple pie, and my first real dish was Borsch (traditional Russian red soup).
But my cooking really took off after I met my husband.
What inspired you to start cooking and baking?
Of course my family. First my mom and dad and all our family friends, everyone cooks perfectly in their own ways. I always looked at them and saw how in the simple way they could make everyone happy. At every gathering, we had full tables of food, so of course, when I'm expecting guests I always cook something special.
Later, my own family, my beloved husband and kids became my inspiration and they are also the strictest judges of my experiments with food.
What was your first impression of Epermarket ?
I really enjoyed ordering from Epermarket. They have a reputation of being the fresh and imported grocery experts, which left me quite intrigued about their product range. Long story short, I ordered online, which was super convenient and easy to use. I then received my order the very next day and everything was packaged well; vegetables and bread were fresh, meat frozen and dairy products were chilled on that hot summer day.
And I loved that I was able to find so many products which are often impossible to find at other stores or markets. Epermarket would help me to expand the list of my family favorite dishes! I'm sure I'll order again soon and I'll definitely recommend it to my friends.
How do you feel about online food shopping?
I love it! I think it is the most convenient and useful thing in our century. Online food shopping is saving me so much time and I spend those moments playing with my kids or doing work, or just relaxing. It even helps me save money, because I buy fewer unnecessary things that were not on the list.
Since I discovered online food shopping I rarely go to the supermarket myself.
Epermarket is a place where you can discover over 5000 imported products, from a source you can trust. Quality and safety first are at the heart of what they do, which is why they have strict measures to ensure their products are curated by professionals who are passionate about food and living a healthy lifestyle. Whether you are looking for fresh fruit and organic vegetables, pantry favorites, or even home care products, Epermarket has everything you need.
What makes Epermarket great?
Easy - It’s super easy to shop, the mini-program and website are available in English, French and Chinese. So this gives everyone access to search our favorite things. Just type what you're looking for and a selection appears 「 Wow」. My favorite part is the category in food, I love Mexican food so I love clicking on the tab and you see many Mexican items.
Convenient - This is a no brainer we are on our phones most of the time, so besides the search button you can pick your day of delivery ( Pre- Plan) and you can also Heart your favorites.
Variety and Pricing - Having variety is super important, being that not everyone is on the same budget. I was impressed with how competitive the prices are with a normal supermarket, especially on products like cheese, organic veggies and beef! So it makes sense to shop from the comfort of our home.
Experience - Overall its a great experience to know products are chosen and good quality.
We show you the steps to achieving these meals.
1st Dish: Stewed Chicken With Spices
Ingredients:
Chicken thighs 6 ~8
Greek yogurt 200g
Cream 200g
butter 50g
2 big onions
3~4 cloves of garlic
salt
pepper
oregano
turmeric
nutmeg
Instructions :
1. Wash the chicken, cut into smaller pieces if desired, wipe all the excess water with a kitchen towel. Chop the onions and garlic, set aside.
2. Warm up the frying pan, melt the butter and fry pieces of the chicken for a couple of minutes on both sides (for better results don't put all chicken in, divide it into 2~3 portions, meat needs to have space between pieces) Take it out of the pan.
3. Put chopped onions into the same frying pan, fry for 3 minutes or so stirring occasionally, add chopped garlic and immediately return the chicken into the frying pan. Stir well.
4. Add all the spices, salt and pepper. Add cream and Greek yogurt at the same time, stir everything together well and cover with the lid. Lower the fire and leave to stew for about 10~15 minutes (depending on the size of the meat pieces).
5. Serve with crouton grated with garlic or with your favorite pasta.
For Croutons
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven for 220°C
2. Slice the bread
3. Put them into the oven for 5~7 minutes
4. Take out and grate with garlic while the bread is still warm.
2nd Dish: Duck breast with beetroot puree
Ingredients :
4~6 duck breasts
3 tomatoes
beetroot 500g
cream 100g
salt
pepper
Instructions :
1. Preheat the oven for 200°C
2. Heat frying pan, sprinkle it with salt and pepper. Put duck breasts skin side down, sprinkle with salt and pepper on top of them (for better result don't put all the meat at once, divide it into 2 portions, keep space between pieces). Fry only on that side for 3~4 minutes.
3. Then take out duck breasts and place them on baking tray skin side up. Bake for 15 minutes.
4. Boil beetroots in the water until tender, cool and peel them.
5. Cut a shallow 「X」 in the bottom of each tomato, put carefully into hot boiled water for 1 minute, then take out and peel. Cut, remove seeds and juice.
6. Place beetroots, tomatoes into a blender or food processor and add the cream. Season with salt and pepper. Blend it to puree texture.
7. Slice the duck breasts into slices, serve with beet puree.
