On September 10th, the Career Planning and Development Office (CPDO) invited Dr. Eric Martin to deliver an information session on the Master of Information Technology program of UNSW. Dr. Eric Martin is the postgraduate coursework academic advisor at the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). In the session, Dr. Martin articulated on the MIT program, detailing the requirements, course structure, placement and so on. Now let's recap some key info from Dr. Martin.
Established in 1949, the University of New South Wales enjoys a high reputation in the World and it is a famous comprehensive research university. The UNSW is also the Top 50 universities worldwide. Currently, the UNSW has 8 Faculties, 47 Schools, and 125 Centres & Institutes. There are 60 thousand students in the university, one-third of whom are international students.
The MIT program belongs to the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), the Engineering Faculty.
World University Ranking Information:
QS 2021: 44th
Times Higher Education 2021: 67th
QS Employer Reputation 2020: 27th
Introduction to the Programs
The MIT program welcomes students from diverse background besides CS/IT. There're 3 articulated programs to meet different needs of students:
- Graduate Certificate in Computing (GradCert)
- Graduate Diploma in Information Technology (GradDip)
- Master of Information Technology (MIT)
Entry Requirements:
- A three year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree, AND a minimum 65% average;
- OR at least three years work experience in the area of science or engineering;
- OR a combination of education AND work experience considered on a case by case basis.
Entry Requirements:
- A three year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree, AND a minimum 65% average, AND a strong enough background in mathematics in several of: discrete maths, linear algebra, engineering maths, calculus, statistics, probability, actuarial maths, numerical methods and vector algebra.
- OR completion of the Graduate Certificate in Computing, AND a minimum 65% average OR no fails.
Entry Requirements:
- A three year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree, a minimum 70% average, AND a strong enough background in mathematics in several of the areas previously listed;
- OR completion of the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology AND a minimum 65% average OR no fails;
- OR completion of the Graduate Certificate in Computing AND a minimum 70% average.
Students need to finish 5 core courses including tools of computing such as Python and C.
For those students who intend to complete the Master program in 1 year rather than 2, advanced standing (credit) can be offered with all those 5 courses above plus 3 courses including Foundations of Computer Science, Microprocessors & Interfacing, and Artificial Intelligence.
Once enrolled in MIT program, students can focus on one of the 6 Specializations, based on individual interest.
There are certain constraints on courses election.
Within the programs of GradDip and MIT, 6 specialisations are offered:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Database System
- E-commerce Systems
- Internetworking
- Data Science and Engineering
- Bioinformatics
Besides the final project and the research, students have to finish at least 6 Advanced Disciplinary Knowledge (ADK) courses.
# Constraint: Final Project or Research Projects
At the last trimesters, students have to complete a capstone course Info Tech Project, which requires a comprehensive application of knowledge in the postgraduate study.
Instead of the Final Project, students can choose to do a research project for graduation, which amounts to 2 courses. To be eligible, students must NOT fail in any course AND obtain an average mark above 75.
Abundant courses in CSE are offered to students which are neither core courses nor ADKs.
Students can choose two courses from other schools, such as telecommunication, math, geographic system, information system, and marketing.
The academic year is divided in 3 trimesters:
Trimester 1 from mid Feb to mid May;
Trimester 2 from mid May to end of Aug;
Trimester 3 from mid Sep to mid Dec.
There are also a 5 weeks summer session.
With full load, students complete 8 courses per year, which means students can enroll in 2 courses only in one trimester and take 3 courses in the other 2 trimesters. (For international students, full load is the only option)
# Teaching Platforms, Opportunities
CSE has several labs. Moodle, Ed, WebCMS3, and Vlab are used as teaching platforms.
In terms of Expos, seminar, and employer presentation, the biggest event is the Career Expo held once a year. This is a precious opportunity for students to get in touch with companies and employers. In addition, there is an activity called SCESoc which can create a community among CSE students.
Q: In the entry requirement, what is the percentage like 70% or 65% means? It is the percentage in a class or it is a mark?
A: It is 70 out of 100. This is depended on the ranking of the university.
Q: In the MIT program, there are some courses from the information system, what are other courses can we choose from business school?
A: There is a course called e-Business from the information system and students also can choose some marketing courses. And we are a technical school so we want students to study more about the tools and to create things.
Q: In the data science specialisation, do we have a limit on the number of applicants of this specialisation?
A: No. Students are not required to decide specialisation when they start to learn. They can change their mind. The best thing is to explore so they have several foundation courses to learn and they can find what they like. They do not have to force themselves to complete the course list.
However, some courses are very popular so students should get prepared to register for the courses.
