Personal Statement
I expressed a strong interest in science at a very young age. Especially after I was awarded a First Prize in the National Mathematics Olympiad, I was even more highly motivated to explore the mystery of science. Then how to make full use of my logical advantage? Influenced by my father, who used to be a successful engineer in SGCC (State Grid Corporation of China), I set my sights on the Electrical and Electronic Engineering and embark on a journey of pursuing the bachelor degree. Fortunately, as a student of the Glasgow College, a joint undergraduate program co-established by the University of Glasgow (UoG) and the University of Electronic Science & Technology of China (UESTC), the more I learned, the more interested in this field I became.
Adopting British’s teaching system, Glasgow College has trained me at the standard of highest quality of education available internationally. English as the language of instruction prepares me perfectly for further education abroad. Courses I took, including 「Signals and Systems」, 「Digital Signal Processing」 and so forth, helped me gain a deeper understanding of my major. 「Embedded Processors」 and 「Electronic System Design」 heightened my interest in communication by involving me in some personal projects, for instance, I independently produced a robot that was able to detect the signal with the specialized mark and reach the mark via wireless communication. Due to my keen interest, I not only performed exceptionally well in almost all of the professional courses, but also gained confidence to further my education in a postgraduate programme relevant to communication and signal processing.
During the undergraduate period, one core course is 「Team Design Project and Skills」. In this course, we designed and constructed an electronic and electrical system (An intelligent car) capable of walking a specific route and releasing fish food into lake. The key component of the robot was an optimization algorithm (an improved PID algorithm) that allowed the car to run a prescribed course. This experience ignited my enthusiasm for electrical and electronic engineering, for I not only found my interest and, perhaps, gift in the communication algorithm, but also experienced a great sense of achievement when applying theoretical knowledge to solve practical complex problems. In projects of this kind, I, usually as the team leader, inspired and unified my teammates and successfully led them to find the best solution when facing different proposals. Consequently, I have greatly cultivated my critical thinking, innovative spirit and project-management skills in the process.
In addition, I have grabbed every chance to solve practical problems via mathematical methods and skills. For instance, in 2015, I led my team to participate in Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) in which we flexibly adopted System Dynamics Model to successfully anticipate the Carrying Capacity of Water Resources of Sichuan region. The committee highly praised the effectiveness and accuracy of our model, and we finally got the honorable mention.
To become an advanced engineer, I believe more specialized study of electrical and electronic engineering is essential. Considering my academic experience in Glasgow College, which reveals to me the incomparable merits of British education system, I would like to pursue graduate study in the Communications and Signal Processing program at Imperial College London. This program attracts me primarily with its educational modules, including group or individual projects that can sharpen my hands-on and research ability. More importantly, it perfectly coincides with my interest and my earlier academic experiences, hence can allow me to integrate and build upon what I have learned previously. Besides, this program also aligns with my dream of furthering a PhD programme and my career objective of becoming an engineer in an internet company. I believe ICL, with its outstanding academic reputation, diversified student body and faculty, and advantageous location, is the best place for me to grow and achieve life goals. With expertise and skills gained in ICL, I will have more chances to become a successful and innovative engineer in the future.
