:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::When is the last time that you were fully rested in your body, mind and spirit? When you need to rest and recharge your personal batteries, how do you do it? Everyone is different. Some people like to be alone to recharge, others gain energy from being with people. Some like to go outside for a walk, others like to curl up on the couch with a good book. We all need rest. Everyone from the super-busy boss to the incredibly productive mother to the neighbor who seems to always be going to the gym. You may think you can get by with little sleep and multiple over-time days, but the truth is: you can’t. God made us this way. The only one who doesn’t need to rest is God and even then, He gave us the example of taking a break when He rested on the seventh day of creation and declared it a holy day of rest for all mankind. So when it comes time to rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit, what do you like to do? Perhaps this is an easy question to answer. The harder question is: when was the last time that you did that? When we think about physical rest, sleep may be at the top of the list. Quite possibly you do not get enough sleep every night. The Bible says that God gives sleep to us. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.
127:2If you are not getting enough sleep at night, what can you do to adjust your schedule? God is the only one who never sleeps! Another way to find rest for our physical body is to move! Exercise is a great way to energize. If you are not keen to hit the gym, then hit the park for a walk with a friend. I love the little park in my neighborhood I am there most days for a jog or a walk. It is refreshing to be surrounded by the trees and flowers and put my body in motion! How do you achieve physical rest? Will you find time this week to give your body a break? When your mind is fired up with exciting plans, new ideas, vision and hope for the future, you might feel great. But what about when you are overloaded with worries, stress and concerns? How can you give your mind some rest? For some, reading books is a great escape. Others might need to change environments such as going out to dinner, visiting a new part of the city or even taking a trip. For many of us, it is the special people in our lives that bring us peace of mind. Even the mighty Apostle Paul found rest from being with his friends. For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus.
7:5-6Do you have friends or family members in your life that help to ease your mind? When is the last time you had a conversation with someone special to you that left you feeling at rest? Maybe it is time for another one of those conversations! The sweetest rest that goes deep into our innermost being is rest we find in our spirit. This kind of rest comes when we are led by our Good Shepherd beside the still waters. Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
62:2-3I find that when I finally sit down with no distractions and open my Bible in my lap to read, I feel a peace come over not just my spirit but also my mind and body. When I focus my mind on God’s Word I experience His rest. When I turn my mind to Him and present my request to my loving Heavenly Father, I am at peace. When I lift my voice in praise, the troubles of this world fade away. When your heart is troubled and needs rest, how do you meet with your Heavenly Father? On a recent hiking trip with friends, at the end of our trail we saw a very steep hill and a ridge that was so high that we couldn’t see what was on top of the ridge. I was curious and decided I wanted to climb the hill. Another friend joined me but the rest stayed below and said they would wait for us. I think the intense incline did not entice them to hike to the top. My friend and I slowly scaled the hill and after about 10 minutes of slowly putting one foot in front of the other, we made it to the top. A soft and quiet forest greeted us. We happily wandered into the forest enjoying the quiet trees. It was beautiful and I wished our other friends had made the effort to come to the top to experience the stillness. My friend and I walked further and further into the forest until we started to feel guilty that we had made our friends wait so long for us. We turned back to the ridge to go down and to our delight we saw our friends climbing up to join us! They all made it to the top and we spent the next hour happily picking mushrooms. The sun started to go down and the rays of the sun were at that wonderful angle that made everything appear just a little golden. We went to the ridge and stood together to sing worship songs in praise of our incredible Creator. As we were singing, suddenly two friends let out a yelp and pointed to the sky – a small piece of a rainbow appeared. We cheered for this little bit of color in the sky and continued to sing. To our amazement, the rainbow began to grow and as we sang song after song with laughing and cheering, God stretched the rainbow out across the entire sky. I had never seen anything like it. It was as if we were cheering God on and He was in turn cheering us on. The hike up to the top of the ridge took a lot of effort, but we were rewarded with a peaceful forest and a remarkable display of God’s glory as He stretched out a rainbow just for us. I don’t think any of us will ever forget the moment. We were so refreshed and delighted by God’s gifts of the beauty of creation. Sometimes the rest we need takes some effort to get to. Jesus promised us that He would give us rest, but it would take a little effort on our part. 「Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.」
11:28-30In these beloved verses, there are three actions that we must do to enter into the deep rest of the soul Jesus offers. Jesus is calling to you; will you answer Him? The cares of the world can make life heavy and drag you down. But when you take a step away from the world and go towards Jesus, the heaviness can be left behind and you can be free to find rest with Him. The wooden yoke is placed on two oxen so together they can pull a plow. Jesus asks you to lay down the yoke that you are pulling with and take up His yoke. What is His calling on your life? Are you pulling with Jesus or are you pulling your own heavy load on your own? What can we learn from Jesus about rest? As you read the gospel stories, you will notice that Jesus was never running behind schedule, never worried about a meeting or his travel itinerary. He fully trusted His Father to lead Him. As a result, Jesus was gentle and meek, never pushing His disciples to get on the road or hurry up. Jesus took time to be with people and took time to be alone with His Father in prayer. He took naps and also stayed up all night to pray. He ate good food as well as fasted. We can learn from Jesus to rest in the capable arms of our Heavenly Father just as He did.
Take some time to rest and be refreshed to go onI encourage you to ask yourself, 「What brings rest to my body, mind and spirit?」 And then find some time each day to make the effort to rest. Resist the urge to keep pushing onward. Rest is a gift from God that will enable you to peacefully continue your journey with Him. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
