【文末有今天的數學題目回顧】

我給同學們答疑的過程中，發現總有同學因為單詞認不準而做不對數學題。
比如我們簡單測試幾個：
1. What is the least possible value of (x-1)^2?
A. -2
B. 0
C. 1
答案：B
least possible value是「最小值」，沒有其他詭異的翻譯方式，(x-1)^2的最小值是0。
2. What is the circumference of a circle with a radius of 2?
答案：4π
circumference是「圓周長」，radius是「半徑」，半徑為2的圓周長是4π
For the region in which the range of the dollar amounts of the four expense categories was least, what percent of total living expense was the Transportation expense in that region?
答案：E
range是「極差」的意思。
題目問下面有個區域的四個支出的類別的金額的極差是最小的，問這個區域的Transportation的支出佔該區域的百分之幾。
首先我們要挑出哪個區域的極差最小，不是看哪個區域條最長，而是看哪個區域（花錢最多的類別-花錢最少的類別）差值最小。
那麼一瞪眼發現T區域花錢最多的Housing是所有區域裡最少的，又T區域花錢最少的Groceries比其他區域還多，所以T極差最小，該區域Transportation佔比20%。
總有同學把range翻譯成「範圍」導致題目做不下去，range在GRE數學中99.9%的情況下考「極差」的意思……
面對同學們不認識單詞，之前我會和同學們說去背微臣GRE數學詞彙2.0詞表。
但在實踐過程中我也發現：
1. 同學們總是著意去背詞表中的難詞，而忽略像range這樣看似簡單的詞，背不準一樣丟分；
2. 有些單詞雖然不認識，但在題目中並不影響理解，因此不需要背。
例如，若在考試中出現octagon，它必然會在後面告訴你這是一個有8條邊或者8個角的多邊形，那麼其實不知道octagon是八邊形的意思也沒關係。
3. 總有同學考試前2天才開始「預習」GRE數學，不知道看哪些詞彙才能臨時抱佛腳……
所以我們更新了微臣GRE數學詞彙3.0：
1. 去除了永遠都不用背的詞彙，減輕記憶負擔；
2. 將所有詞彙按考試詞頻重要性分類，分為「入門必會」「僅做了解」「考前必看」，考前抱佛腳可只過 「考前必看」。

M為矩形，矩形S的面積是M的1.5倍，S的長是M的1.25倍，問S的寬比M的寬多百分之幾？
