聊聊 whether 和if
翻看外研版《英語》教材，在八下110頁課文注釋中讀到這樣一段話：
「在賓語從句後面沒有or not的情況下，一般來說兩個詞（if和whether）都可以用。如果從句後面還有or not的話，一般就要選擇whether，構成whether ... or not的結構。」
我們日常教學中一般也是這樣講的，那麼這樣講是不是很準確呢？
下面先來看一下人教版《英語》教材中都出現過哪些含有whether的句子吧。是不是也這樣講了它的用法呢？
whether第一次出現在詞彙表中，是在八年下第九單元。其詞彙表中的釋義為「不管……（還是）；或者……（或者）；是否」。
課文中的句子是這樣的：
Whether you like Indian food, Western food or Japanese food, you』ll find it all in Singapore!
此句中的whether意為「不管……（還是）」，引導的是讓步狀語從句。
教材課後注釋中，並未對此作出解析，是不是可以理解為此處的whether並不是重點內容，學生能理解句意即可。
whether第二次出現在九年級第一單元。
Whether or not you can do this well depends on you learning habits。
這是首次出現關於whether與or not搭配的句子，而且是「親密無間」的緊挨在一起了，並未分開使用。
課後注釋對其進行了分析。（見下圖）
此解析中講了whether 與or not搭配使用的兩種情況，但並未像外研版教材中強調的「出現or not時，一般與whether搭配」的用法。
接著，在九年第二單元、第六單元用中又出現了以下幾個句子。
Bill wonders whether they』ll have Zongzi again next year. (Unit 2 p9)
I wonder whether June is a good time to visit Hong Kong. (Unit 2 Grammar Focus)
He just cares about whether he can make more money and he hates Christmas. (Unit 2 p14)
Some people doubt whether the inventor came up with the idea himself or herself. (Unit 6 p48)
（教材裡差不多就這些吧，如果有其他的句子，也應該與此大同小異。）
以上四句中的whether引導的均為賓語從句，但都未與or not搭配。
以上是教材中出現的含有whether的句子。
再來看看if吧。
if 早在七年下冊Unit 10中就出現過，但詞彙表中的釋義只給出了「如果」。
If he or she blows out all the candles in one go, the wish will come true. (七下Unit 10)
在八年上冊Unit 10中則重點講了if引導條件狀語從句的用法。
在九年Unit 2 4a（連詞成句）中出現了if意為「是否」，引導賓語從句的句子。
I wonder if mooncakes are delicious. (九年Unit 2 4a p12)
當然，教材中有關if引導賓語從句的例句還有一些，在此就不一一列舉了。因為我們對if講的挺多了。
從教材的例句及解析來看，並未有這兩個詞引導賓語從句時的明確區別。
那麼，再看看各種語法書中對於這兩個詞與or not 連用時都是怎麼講的吧。
《牛津英語用法》中這樣說：
當選擇的兩個方面都給出時，whether is more common, especially in a formal style:
Let me know whether (if) you can come or not.
《朗文語法》中給出這樣的例句：
I want to know whether/if he has signed the contract (or not).
還有這樣的解析：
（句子開頭的從句就是主語從句，在be後邊的句子則為表語從句。）
舊版初中英語教材中的句子：
The cat saw the parrot and wanted to know if it was a bird or not.
《Grammar for use》中的句子：
She asked me if I was going to the store (or not).
綜合一下以上各種書中的例句來看， whether和if在引導賓語從句時的區別並不取決於從句的句尾是否有or not。只不過是從句句尾有or not時用whether 多一些而已。
但是，「whether or not」這種寫法中的whether是不可以替換成if的，不管是引導主語從句還是賓語從句。當然，if也不能引導前置主語從句。
下面簡單總結一下這兩個詞的基本用法吧：
whether 的基本用法：
1. 介詞後面用whether；
2. whether後面可以接不定式（to do）；
3. discuss後面需要用whether；
4. whether可以引導賓語從句，狀語從句，主語從句，表語從句等。
if的基本用法：
1. 引導條件狀語從句（「如果」）；
2. 引導賓語從句（「是否」）；
3. 引導後置主語從句。
如：It’s still uncertain if/whether he’s coming or not.
