在日本老一輩成名的賽車手中,大部分都使用過豐田AE86開展其賽車生涯的歷史,當然土屋圭市是其中的領軍人物。
熱愛深夜飛車的土屋在1984年駕駛一輛豐田AE86參加本土A級賽事,並創出六連勝的紀錄,而他的頭牌便是「甩尾過彎絕技」。
從當時日本山路漂移文化的誕生,到後來為「頭文字D」擔當顧問,可以說土屋在「著名腐二代的AE86神話」中充當了相當重要的角色。
1978年,豐田推出Tercel,這是豐田基層車系轉投FF(前置前驅)陣營的標誌。
而當時定位性能的AE86卻依然保持FR(前置後驅)布局。民間的說法是因為當時豐田的FF技術未如理想,前輪驅動難以兼顧靈敏轉向與強悍動力,於是高性能型號只好硬著頭皮延用FR布局。
其實AE86在出世之前,豐田進行了大量的測試活動,其中之一便是在山葉賽道上連續行駛三天三夜,以證明了AE86 4A-GEU的雙凸輪軸16氣門發動機的耐用性能極強。
而據說當年的開發團隊為AE86定下三大目標,一是挑戰當時筑波賽道最快單圈紀錄,二是稱霸日本國內的拉力賽事,三是挑戰200km/h的極速,結果都完美完成任務。
作為AE86焦點之一的這副4A-GEU直列四缸發動機,除擁有雙凸輪軸控制每氣缸四氣門外,還有t-vis可變進氣及efi-d電子燃油噴注系統。相比早一代的2T-GE,4A-GEU以轉數上升迅猛著稱,飆進7300rpm的黃區甚至7700rpm的紅區都不費吹灰之力。
其實要說AE86是天生的甩尾好料一點不為過。車身淨重不到940kg,在介乎失控的臨界狀態下,車重越輕,橫向加速力越小,由此車手可更輕易控制車輛橫滑的幅度,此其一。
另一項便是AE86後懸設計採用非獨立的硬軸,這種設計在車輛全油出彎時牽引力比雙連杆或多連杆都要差,但是偏偏應對甩尾玩家的要求。
在結構上,非獨立式懸掛的活動部件相對較少,並且各部分均十分堅固,車手得到的行車訊息更加直接,對於車輛動態的掌握也更加充分。

這款AE86的改裝十分複雜,所以在國外媒體上也被命名為「世界最強改裝AE86」(WORLD』S BEST TUNED TOYOTA AE86)。
