Never trust people blindly, but I believe it’s better give people the benefit of the doubt rather than be cynical about everyone and everything people do.

If you don’t really know someone, you should assume they are a good person until proven otherwise.

不要盲目地相信一個人，但是也不要對每個人、每件事都充滿了懷疑。如果你真的不了解一個人，再得到驗證之前就姑且相信他們是好人吧。

Of course there are bad people out there who only do selfish things and don’t care about anyone else’s well-being – those people really do exist.

的確，這世上肯定有壞人，他們很自私，只關心自己的利益，置別人於不顧，這樣的人真的存在。

But for everyone else, try to give them the benefit of the doubt that they are good people, even when they make mistakes or do terrible things.You should try harder to give people the benefit of the doubt:

對待別人，我們都姑且相信他們是好人，人都會犯錯或者做過一些不好的事情。你應該給他們一次機會，試著相信他們。

 

今天我們要學習的短語就是give the benefit of the doubt，which means regard someone as innocent until proven otherwise; lean toward a favorable view of someone. 

表達的意思在被證實之前，姑且相信某人是無辜的，儘量往好的方向靠。

比如說，有人問你借了錢，可是一直沒還，這個時候就不要去想他是不是想賴帳，而是想他是不是有什麼暫時的困難。

John didn't pay me back the $20 he owes me, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he simply forgot and isn't trying to rip me off.

John借我的20刀還沒有還，但是我選擇相信他，也許他只是忘了，不是想要欺騙我。

 

It also means to decide that you will believe someone, even though you are not sure that what the person is saying is true.

這個短語還可以表示你選擇相信某人，即便你不確定ta說的話是不是真的。

She said she was late because her flight was canceled, and we gave her the benefit of the doubt.

她說她遲到是因為航班被取消了，我們選擇相信她的話。

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt before we start accusing him. There may be a good explanation for the missing money.
