An infinitive is a verb form that matches the base form of a verb and is usually preceded by the word to.

An example is 「to tell.」

An infinitive phrase is made up of an infinitive, its complements, and any modifiers of the infinitive and its complements.

An example is 「to tell a friend the news.」

Infinitives and infinitive phrases can be used in sentences as adjectives, adverbs, or nouns.

Infinitives or infinitive phrases used as adjectives are diagramed in the same way as prepositional phrases are.

Write the word to on a slant line below the noun or pronoun modified by the infinitive.

Write the base form of the verb on a horizontal line drawn to the right of the slant line, near its lower end.
