Introduction to the Leeds Metropolitan University
Leeds Metropolitan, once Leeds Polytechnic, gained its university status in 1992. The polytechnic grew out of the Leeds Mechanics Insitute, founded in 1824 for the education of local artisans.
There's a clear emphasis on vocational courses, although LMU now turns out more engineers, teachers and IT workers than mechanics. Drama, dance, cinematics, hotel catering, personnel management and sport are all well regarded.
By initiating and nurturing contacts with small and medium-size businesses, the university has helped to make its work-focused students very employable. In 1996, it won the Queen's Anniversary Award for its work with small businesses.
Sports facilities based at Beckett Park, a couple of miles from the city centre, are amazing, as are the learning centres.
Entertainment is also a strong feature. Run by a team of professionals, LMU boasts a mixture of club nights, big-name bands, comedy and movie nights: the scene here is famous and not just in the minds of its own students' union representatives. It's a party place.
Leeds is the northern home of Harvey Nichols and Harry Ramsden's, a great fish and chip shop before it became a terrible airport franchise. Still, it made sense for the business and, in case you hadn't heard, money is a serious subject in Yorkshire.
