Almost 2,000 runners, including about 600 Tsinghua freshmen, took part in a 10-kilometer race held at Tsinghua’s campus on November 14th.
Sun Jingyao, a first year undergraduate from the School of Life Sciences, earned her tenth place in the women’s 10-kilometer race.
Several notable track stars nurtured at Tsinghua University were present to offer support to the event, including Hu Kai and Wang Yu. Hu Kai was the first Chinese competitor to win a world championship in the men's 100-meters at the 2005 Izmir University in Turkey.Wang Yu won bronze for China at the 2013 Summer University in Kazan in the high jump event. Chen Lu, who won the first ever Olympic medal in figure skating for China also shared her experience on the stage.
Physical exercise is regarded as a treasured tradition and an important part of campus life at Tsinghua. The university introduced a scheme called Sunshine Running in 2008 as a way to encourage first and second year students to run at least once every three days during each semester in order to maintain fit and active.
Tsinghua’s first campus marathon event, U-Run, was held last semester on April 12th 2015. Nearly 3,200 Tsinghua students, faculty members and alumni taking part in the run.
