當你在談論一段時間，它必須在某件事發生之前消失，可以實用 till 和 until；till 比 until 出現的早，被用了好幾個世紀，它不是 until 的縮寫；用作介詞或連詞，意為「直到……為止」，兩者常可換用，有的人認為 until 比 till 稍正式，所以在正式文體中，一般用 until，而在口語或非正式文體中則兩者都可用。
一、till 和 until 用於肯定句中，表示動作一直持續到所說時間為止，主句謂語必須是持續性動詞，例如：
until/till 作為連詞：
We waited until/till he came.
我們一直等到他來。
Let's wait until the rain stops.
咱們等雨停了吧。
He put his retirement on hold until he had found a solution.
他推遲了退休，直到他找到了解決辦法。
I'm just killing time until I can talk to the other witnesses.

until/till 作為介詞：
Until now I have always lived alone.
直到現在，我一直獨自生活。
He continued working up until/till his death.

The street is full of traffic from morning until/till night.

Until 1982 he was senior lecturer in botany at Durham University.

二、若主句用終止性動詞，則應為否定式 not ... until ... （因為終止性動詞一旦被否定就成為狀態，便可持續），意為「直到......才，在......以前不」，例如：
I didn't go to bed until/till tomorrow.
直到天亮才上床。
We did not get off the bus until/till it stopped.
直到車停了，我們才下了公交車。
The traffic laws don't take effect until the end of the year.
交通法要到年底才生效。
We didn’t leave until/till he came.
直到他來我們才走。
You're not going out until/till you've finished this.
