From 3-5 September, 2004 Minister Wang Shucheng Paid a three days visit to Guangdong for studying water management in the province. He went to the sites of Dongshen Water Supply Project, Shenzhen River Harnessing project, Dongguan Embankment etc. and listened to the report from the provincial government. For the last more than 50 years, over 80 billion Yuan of investment has been put into water regulation in Guangdong Province. Currently 6732 reservoirs, 16,000 km of river or sea dykes, 54,319 water diversion works are built. The effective irrigated area has increased from 652,000 ha to 1.99 million ha and 1.082 million ha of eroded land has been controlled. Now the province is planed to enhance its capacity of flood control and rural water supply. Minister Wang said although achievement has been made in Guangdong, more efforts are needed for further accelerating water development. Firstly, financial resources should be gathered for increasing input on drinking water supply to rural residents and animal husbandry, flood control and irrigation. Secondly, new concept of scientific development and sustainable development should be applied in decision-making and strategic planning in water resources management. Water resources planning should be guided by the scientific development view, and properly deal with issues of urban water supply, water conservation, water pollution control and ecosystem recovery of river basins.
