World amazed over sharp turnaround in China-U.S. relations

Senior officials from China and the United States reached new and important consensus on bilateral ties during the second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue that concluded on May 25, Global Times reported on May 25.

The reunion of China and the United States added more uncertainty to the already volatile arena of international politics. On May 24, some 50 ministerial-level officials from both sides attended the second round of dialogues. Such strong lineups convinced the world that the dialogue was already half done. According to Voice of America, the about-face in China-U.S. ties was inconceivable.

The China-U.S. relations entered into a warm spring from a cold winter in less than a year, and previously, it also took almost the same amount of time to drive the ties from summer to winter. Such a big turnaround was impossible in Cold War era.

Ni Feng, a research fellow with the Institute of American Studies under Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), noted that unlike the 1990s, when crisis was the main theme, China-U.S. relations have been characterized by stability since 2000. The friction and tension last year and early this year are abnormal, and the sharp turn over the past six weeks has brought China-U.S. relations back on track.

Professor Shen Dingli with Fudan University held that both China and the United States are powers, and some issues, which can not be solved by either country, call for joint efforts. For such circumstances, the dialogue is the result of a pressing situation. China-U.S. ties can be a kind of easy, popular and win-win work culture.
