The Best way to Learn English

How can people learn English well? The best answer would be: If you have an opportunity to stay in an English environment for a few years, you would definitely learn it well. However, with most of uslacking this opportunity, I am recommending some of the best ways other thanthat, to learn English well though it is still about how to dip yourself intoEnglish environment within your ability. This article would mainly focus onreading and writing.

As for reading, I strongly recommend preparing an English book and reading it. Although most students would struggle with the difficulty of understanding English novels, I still think it is avery   efficient way to improve readingskills. Just imagine, if you can read paragraphs in novels and comprehend meanings in long, difficult sentences that appear quite normally in books, howcan you not understand the easier passages in examinations? The book doesn’t have to be difficult or scientific. You can simply choose some book that you like and read a few paragraphs once a day. Then, with gradual effort, you can witness the change in yourself every time you read something. With the daily attempt to think or read in English, you will grasp English as a language thatyou can use, instead of something only to be tested as a subject.

Writing is usually a difficult thing forus, because it tests various skills, including grammar, logic and coherent communication. Yet, I think it’s really simple to score high in compositions,if you focus on two things: accuracy and the stretch of main ideas. Accuracy isthe first thing needed, and you can achieve it with your effort of correcting your past mistakes and learning grammar in English classes, so hopefully everyone can use their language accurately. However, if you don’t really understand grammar and would make mistakes every time, there is also a small suggestion that you should write things that you are sure of. Use simpler sentences and words you know, instead of wanting to achieve big but fall short because of idiotic mistakes. Teachers wouldn’t give you scores too low only because you don’t use fancy words or sentences, but they do decrease your grade because of spelling or tense mistakes. If you have time, you should also check when you finish to see if you made any tenses wrong. That check helps a lot.

Main ideas are needed if you want some higher scores. I usually think about how deep I can get the composition before writing it. It’s like how we write in Chinese, thinking about the theme andmain ideas every time we see articles. In English compositions, you can alsouse the same way of thinking. For instance, you can see one topic on environmental protection, and then you should think of how to propose, in thelast or the second last paragraph, the global awareness and methods to avoid pollution or damages it could bring. Talk about things in higher grounds, and focus on themes like culture, nature, studying, etc. If you want higher scores, always be sure to land on main ideas in lieu of to just invite somebody or to just apply for something. Think about this, and write in clear sentences which can be simple and it must be easy for teachers to understand.

Actually, I really want to emphasize on one idea: think in English while you are reading or writing, instead of thinking in Chinese and translating them around. If you can develop a system to think in English, you wouldn’t need that difficult transmitting work anymore, only toperform in English using the most natural way. Don’t try to read and translate every word in one sentence, but read as if you are reading something in your own mother tongue. Don’t analyze the sentence structure too much, but staying with its meaning as how it appears to you and how you understand it in English instead of taking it apart. With this skill learned, I shouldn’t think there will be any more student who can』 learn English well.
