歡迎來到芳芳的英語口語課堂!
Welcome to a Fangfang lesson
今天我們要學『等等我!』在英國他們怎麼說
Today we're going to learn how we say 'wait' in the UK.
『等等吧!』Ways to say 'wait' in English
HOLD YOUR BLOODY HORSES, SIR
Hey guys and girls! In todays 芳芳 lesson we're going to be learning how to tell someone to hold on, wait up and hang on a second.Well of course what we are talking about here is 等!你等我!嘿,孩子們!在今天的課程中,我們將學習如何告訴別人等一下。"Please wait sir, I will only be a moment."
先生,請等一下
However if we were to 'deformalize' it ever so slightly, we can add an 'up' on the end of 'wait'.然而,如果我們將它稍微「非正式化」,我們可以在「wait」的末尾加上一個「up」。"Wait up, mate! I'm almost there!"The 'up' here makes it seem less harsh, more friendly in a sense. In reality it does not add any extra meaning to the word, it just makes it more 地道 localized.這裡的「up」使它看起來不那麼苛刻,在某種意義上更友好。實際上,它並沒有給這個詞添加任何額外的含義,只是使它更加本地化。Let's move on to word number 2: Hold on/Hold up.讓我們繼續說第二個字:hold on/hold up。To 'hold' literally means to 抓住,or 保持你的位置. 「hold」字面意思是「抓住」或者「保持你的位置」。"Hold on to my place in the queue, please." However it can be used to tell someone to wait. But really the 'hold' here technically means 堅持住!But in spoken english you can understand it as 等等.但實際上,這裡的「hold」在實際上意味著「堅持住」!但在英語口語中,你可以理解為「等等」。"Hold up/on, help is coming!" Now a fantastic phrase that we use here in the UK is:I think this is interesting because it is kind of similar to chinese using the horse as a metaphor - 穩住你的馬,我馬上到. If you wanted to be experimental you could add an emphasizer between the 'your' and 'horses'. 我覺得這很有趣,因為它有點像中國人用馬作比喻 - 「抓住你的馬,我馬上到」。如果你想做實驗,你可以在「你的」和「馬」之間加一個強調詞。"Hold your bloody horses will you!"That's my best translation I could do for that sentence, I hope it's 地道 enough!
The next word we have here is 'slow down'. I don't think this needs and special explanation, it's 慢點兒, which implies 'wait'.下一個詞是「slow down」。我不認為這需要特別的解釋,這是指「等待」,「慢點」。The last word is 'hang on'. The word 'hang' means 吊, as in to 緊跟不放 when holding on to something.最後一個字是「hang on」。其實是「吊」但是可以理解成是「堅持住」或者「緊跟不放」。"He hang on to the cliff edge for dear life"(An added note here - 'for dear life' means 死命地.)
So hang on means 抓住,or堅持住, similar to our 'hold' meaning. So in fact it's used in the same way, however you cannot say 'hang up', this is incorrect, you can only say 'hang on'.所以「hang」的意思是「堅持」,或者「堅持住」,類似於我們的「hold」意思。所以實際上它的用法是一樣的,但是你不能說「hang up」,這是不正確的,你只能說「hang on」。"Hang on mate, I'm on my way"
等等吧朋友,我在路上了
