文化面面觀 永遠的抒情大師--Johnny Mathis 考考你 趁熱打鐵1
影片對白 Its time that you stop making excusessothat you dont have to prove anything. 文化面面觀 永遠的抒情大師--Johnny MathisBirth Name: John Royce Mathis
Genre: Vocal Music
Active: 50s - 2000s
Instrument: Vocals
One of the last and most popular in a long line oftraditionalmale vocalists who emerged before the rock-dominated1960s, JohnnyMathis concentrated on romantic readings of jazz andpop standardsfor the ever-shrinking adult contemporary audience ofthe 60s and70s. Though he debuted with a flurry of singles-chartactivity,Mathis later made it big in the album market, where adozen of hisLPs hit gold or platinum and over 60 made the charts. While heconcentrated on theme-oriented albums of show tunes andtraditionalfavorites during the 60s, he began incorporating softrock by the70s and remained a popular concert attraction well intothe90s.
Unsurprisingly, given his emphasis on long sustained notesandheavy vibrato, Johnny Mathis studied with an opera coach priortohis teenage years, and was almost lured into the profession;hisother inspirations were the smoother crossover jazz vocalistsofthe 1940s -- Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstine, and LenaHorne.Mathis was an exceptional high school athlete in SanFrancisco, butwas wooed away from a college track scholarship and apotentialspot on the Olympic squad by the chance to sing. He wassigned to amanagement contract by club owner Helen Noga, whointroduced thesinger to George Avakian, jazz producer for ColumbiaRecords.Avakian signed him and used orchestras conducted by TeoMacero, GilEvans, and John Lewis to record Mathis self-titleddebut album in1957. Despite the name talent and choice ofstandards, it wasmostly ignored upon release.

Columbia A&R executive Mitch Miller -- known forhisdesperately pop-slanted Sing Along albums and TV show --decidedthe only recourse was switching Mathis to Millers brand ofpopballadry, and the formula worked like a charm; the LPWonderful,Wonderful didnt include but was named after a Top 20 hitlater in1957, which was followed by the number five Its Not forMe toSay and his first number one, Chances Are. From that pointon,Johnny Mathis concentrated strictly on lush ballads foradultcontemporary listeners.
Though he charted consistently, massive hit singles were rareforJohnny Mathis during the late 50s and 60s -- half of hiscareerTop Ten output had occurred in 1957 alone -- so he chose tofocusinstead on the burgeoning album market, much like FrankSinatra, his main rival during the late 50s as the most populartraditionalmale vocalist. Mathis moved away from show tunes andtraditionalpop into soft rock during the 70s, and found his secondnumber onesingle, Too Much, Too Little, Too Late, in 1978.Recorded as aduet with Deniece Williams, the single prompted Mathisto begintrying duets with a variety of partners (including DionneWarwick,Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, and Nana Mouskouri), thoughnone ofthe singles enjoyed the success of the original. Mathiscontinuedto release and sell albums throughout the 90s -- hisfifth decadeof recording for Columbia -- among them 1998s BecauseYou LovedMe: Songs of Diane Warren and 2000s Johnny Mathis onBroadway.(John Bush, All Music Guide)
