Purdue University is one of the United State’s top-ranked public universities and is considered to be the No. 1 destination for international students in STEM disciplines. Purdue is also famous for its internship/Co-OP programs through the Center for Career Opportunities (CCO).
Purdue offers more than 200 majors in 11 disciplines, and students can pair any major with a Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
International undergraduate students comprise 12.2% of the total undergraduate admittees, with China ranking first (2756 students in 2020). With an acceptance rate of 60%, thousands of high-school students apply for Purdue’s undergraduate programs every year. Average admission stats are:
GPA: 3.69 å
SAT: 1350
ACT 28
Despite having good grades and high SAT/ACT scores, many fail to get into Purdue. So, what does a student do to differentiate themselves from the thousands other qualified students vying for the same spots? They use all the available space on their application to show how they are unique. In particular, they show how they will:
Go on to do amazing things with their lives following graduation
Contribute positively to the school community
(Want to learn more about this? Watch my free workshop titled The World Awaits Strategy: How to beat the competition and attend one of the best universities in the United States.)
I find many applicants waste space by restating things they』ve included elsewhere in their application. You had crazy-good grades in high school? That’s great - admissions officers (AOs) will see that on your transcripts. You volunteered for a few hours over the summer? Also great - but that belongs in your activities list.
As a first step, I always have my clients write down everything they want admissions officers to know about them. And I mean everything - accomplishments, struggles, personal values, personal history, passion, motivation, etc. Then we work together to determine where each of these things work best in the application: activities list, resume, letters of recommendation, personal statement, supplemental essays, portfolio, or interviews. After this, we start tackling each application element, one-by-one.
Read on to find out what you need to submit for Purdue.
Undergraduate Admission Requirements
The Common Application and the Coalition Application are accepted. You』ll have to pay an admission fee, which is 60 USD (non-refundable).
Application Essays: One personal statement and three supplemental essays (two if you skip the optional one) are required, which I explain in detail below.
Secondary-school grades: High-school transcripts, mark sheets, diplomas, and certificates must be uploaded to the online application.
Purdue requires a candidate to complete:
· Math - Eight Semesters
· English - Eight Semesters
· Social Studies - Six Semesters
· Lab Science - Six semesters (for engineering 2 science semesters must be chemistry. For nursing, pharmacy, and veterinary nursing, 2 science semesters must be biology and 2 must be chemistry)
Chinese applicants must submit:
· Transcripts of grades for years 9, 10, and 11 if applicants have not yet graduated· Final senior secondary school transcript for years 10, 11, and 12 if applicants have graduated· Students accepting admission to Purdue must submit a final senior secondary school transcript including the results of years 10, 11, and 12 once available
4. SAT or ACT scores: Generally, applicants must have 600+on the Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) section of the SAT or 26+ on the English section of the ACT.
Purdue highly encourages international students to take SAT or ACT writing. Applicants who submit a score of 33 or higher in SAT EBRW or a 28 or higher in ACT English may be exempt from submitting TOEFL/IELTS/British Ordinary Level English Exam scores..
However, For Spring, Summer, and Fall 2021, Purdue istest-flexible due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
5. Proof of English proficiency: TOEFL/IELTS/DET (Duolingo English Test — accepted temporarily for 2021 applications) must be sent from the test-taking agencies. Because different programs require different English proficiency scores, please check the website for specifics.
6. Letter of recommendation: According to Purdue:
「Though not required, a letter of recommendation is strongly encouraged, especially for students eligible to be considered for scholarships, for the Honors College, or for those who are applying to highly competitive programs.」
How to Stand Out for Purdue
❤️ ❤️ The rest of this article will focus on putting together an application that will wow Purdue’s AOs. My goal is to give you all the necessary information and insight to DIY; however, the assistance of an expert always helps. If you would like help from a study abroad consultant with more than a decade of experience, contact me (WeChat: kvanderweert; Email: kvanderweert@worldawaits.net). I can help you with your entire application (including profile development and school selection) or with pieces of your application that you feel could be more powerful.❤️ ❤️
1. Get amazing grades
Grades are not everything, but (naturally) better grades increase your chances of admission. They not only highlight academic proficiency but can offset low SAT or ACT scores.
By preparing yourself from the beginning of high-school, you』ll be more likely to have better grades, especially in courses admissions officers favor. As stated above, you should have a GPA of 3.69 or higher, and the more rigorous your course load the better.
For help building your academic profile, you can reach out to me to discuss the courses you should focus on — and, more importantly, how you can take those courses as an international applicant.
2. Develop your qualifications
AOs review applications — All. Day. Long. Yours must stand out among the others. Why would admissions take an interest in your profile if it only meets the bare minimum?
Participating in extracurricular and volunteer activities adds to your application. AOs want to see how you will fit into their campus and school culture, and the experiences you have outside of the classroom are one way they assess this. Purdue wants to see that you are passionate about something (it does not need to be related to your major), are an active member of your community, and that you are prepared for success at the college level.
Extracurricular and volunteer experiences show that you are more than a set of grades or test scores. Spend your high school years developing yourself beyond your quantitative measurements, and you will do well. If, however, you don’t have the time for this, you will need to think creatively about what you have done in high school and how you can present it. Connect with me if you need help with this; I have lots of ideas and experience filling out my clients』 non-academic backgrounds.
3. Know your stuff
Visit the website and note important dates and deadlines, setting reminders for yourself leading up to the due dates.
Since you』ll be submitting several essays, you have a lot of writing to do. Writing calls for research. To show AOs why you belong at Purdue and how it』ll enable you to do great things in the future, you need lots of information about the university, its campus, and its culture. I suggest you do a number of things to prepare for your essays:
Read through the school website, including pages on available resources (i.e. research labs, libraries, student support centers), campus activities and clubs, and professors』 personal sites. Take note of important or interesting things so that you can address them in your writing.
Visit non-school-sponsored sites like CampusReel to get an idea of what life is like on campus.
Sign up for online campus tours. Because these are tracked, this will also add to your demonstrated interest. (Want to know more about this? Read:
Reach out to current students. They know what it’s really like on campus and can help you identify the ways you will fit in. Simply search for student representatives in the website search bar.
4. Write a killer personal statement
I cannot emphasize this enough. Most applicants have excellent grades and test scores — just like you — so you must submit an amazing PS to stand out. A strong essay will not get you admitted if you don’t have the requisite academic credentials, but a weak essay will absolutely strike you from the admit list.
Although Purdue accepts the Common App and the Coalition App, I suggest you complete one of the Common App prompts because they collaborate with more universities. When you are done writing it, you will then be able to submit the same essay to the Coalition App by simply cutting it down to 500 words.
To write a personal statement that convinces AOs that you’re an ideal candidate, begin by reading my article on the Common Application Essay. It will help you determine which prompt to select and how to write a unique story. But, in short, you must avoid writing a generic essay by digging deep and writing about yourself in a way that highlights the novelty you possess.
Once you have determined which essay prompt grabs you - which essay prompt you feel you can rotate a unique story around - it’s time to start brainstorming. I walk my clients through several brainstorming activities, but my favorite involves identifying their core values. Why? Because your core values are your guiding principles; they motivated you in the past, and they will continue to do so in the future. For example, if the challenge of tackling a robotics competition inspired you to learn programming or the desire of beating your last debate ranking inspired you to take speech classes over summer break, it’s likely that new challenges will motivate you to success in the future. When AOs understand this about you (or whatever your personal values are), they see you as more than a set of test scores and grades and can envision you on their campus. Values add humanity to your application, and when presented properly, serve as the thread that ties everything in your application together. Want to read some examples of awesome values-based writing? Check out This I Believe (thisibelieve.org) as well as Gaining Admission to Top-Tier Universities: 5 Personal Statements that Worked (https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/36782321).
Next, freewrite. If possible, give yourself a couple weeks to write down everything that pops into your head on your topic(s) of choice and your personal values. Spend 10 minutes or so every single day on this activity. 10 minutes - that’s it! Set a timer and go. The purpose of freewriting is to keep your writing loose and authentic. You don’t want your essay to sound fake or 「thesaurized」, so use this activity to get comfortable writing with your own voice and to avoid forcing an essay into what you think AOs want to read.
「One of the great clichés of college admissions is the exhortation that students find their own voices in the essay (and interviews)—and 'be themselves.' It’s a cliché because it’s good advice." - William Fitzsimmons, Harvard Dean of Admissions
With your juices flowing, it’s then time to move on to the main event - drafting. There are three ways that I suggest organizing an essay: narrative, iterative, and circular. Choose the one the best fits you and your story.
Narrative essays follow a traditional story arc, like Disney or Harry Potter movies: 1) Everything is normal, 2) A conflict arises, 3) The main character (you) makes an important decision or action, and 4) Everything is better. Keep in mind the conflict does not need to be a challenge; it may be a question, a challenge, a goal, or an opportunity.
Iterative essays are a little more advanced than narrative essays because they follow a pattern that isn’t quite as obvious. Writing an iterative essay involves creating a new whole from separate fragments, such as ideas, values, experiences, pictures, etc. Think of a montage from a movie, where several scenes are shown briefly and rapidly to show the passage of time in a condensed, efficient way. The falling in love montage, for example, might show a couple meeting, going on their first date, meeting each other's families, and finally getting engaged. A few images tell the entire story. Iterative essays do the same thing. The goal is to find a theme that links the short stories or examples so they connect in a meaningful way for the reader.
Circular essays end in the same spot they begin, with the main character undergoing a transformation. You can accomplish this by using flashback or by following a story circle: 1) The main character is in a comfortable place, 2) They want something new, 3) They enter into an unfamiliar situation, 4) They get what they want, 5) But they pay a price for it, 6) They return to where they started having changed or learned something. Circular essays are compelling because by ending where they begin, they naturally include an element of closure, which is satisfactory for the reader.
The first draft may be poorly written or may not convey your message, but don’t get disappointed. After lots of revising, editing, and proofreading, you』ll have a solid final draft. It takes perseverance. Of course, reach out at any time if you want the help of an expert.
5. Write amazing supplemental essays
Purdue has three supplemental essays, one of which is optional.
Essay 1 — [OPTIONAL] Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (Respond in 250 words or fewer.)
This one’s optional so you might think of skipping it, but I suggest the opposite. Take every chance you get to convince the AOs of your greatness.
To answer this prompt, select an extracurricular or work experience that best reflects who you are deep down; AOs want to peek inside your mind and know who you are as a person. However, don’t (if possible) write about an event that overlaps with information elsewhere in your application.
Check out the activity list you』ve included in the Common Application. Which activity had a profound impact on you, shaped your perspective, or helped you be a better person? Describe the experience and how it carries value for you.
Many students worry that their activity essay needs to be related to their chosen major; it doesn’t. AOs are most interested in learning about the qualities and values you will bring to their campus, so find an extracurricular that allows you to present these things, whether it’s major-related or not.
Additionally, some students think this prompt is asking about their hobby or favorite activity. If you can write a 250-word description of a hobby, then, of course, go ahead and write it. However, AOs will want to see how it defines you as a person. If it doesn’t, select an activity that has had an impact on you.
Essay 2 — How will opportunities at Purdue support your interests, both in and out of the classroom? (Respond in 100 words or fewer.)
This is a Why University X essay, one of the most common supplementals you will encounter. Please review this article for a how-to with examples of good and bad answers.
With this type of essay, the most important thing to understand is that it is not a 「Why Purdue is Great」 essay but a 「Why Purdue and I are Perfect Together」 essay. The key is to write about your passions, needs, and personal qualities by connecting them to SPECIFIC opportunities offered at Purdue. Don’t include reasons that are offered by other universities.
Essay 3 — Briefly discuss your reasons for pursuing the major you have selected. (Respond in 100 words or fewer.)
This is another common supplemental — Why Major X. Purdue lets you choose two majors (first choice and second choice), though most applicants only select one because a Why Major X essay is required for each selection.
As a 100-word essay (7 to 10 lines), you have to be concise. The AOs want a compact answer containing your aims behind your intended major, so, when possible, give them some history and/or some big questions you have been pondering. For example, you might explain your interest in robotics as support for an electrical engineering major, or you might wonder-through-writing how nation-building impacts humanitarian aid in Africa as support for an international relations major. Then explain how Purdue’s specific courses and resources will help you achieve your goals.
The key to this essay is to write about yourself rather than the major. Something motivated you to apply to a specific major — describe that.

5. 英語水平證明:託福/雅思/DET(多鄰國英語考試- 2021年暫時接受申請)必須由參加考試的機構提供。
Why University X
