2013年考研剛剛結束，近180萬人的報考規模再創新高。這意味著考研人數已經連續9年超過百萬，並且連續4年以超10萬人的速度遞增。

周六參加今年研究生入學考試的人數達180萬，又創新高。近幾年大學畢業生就業狀況不佳，報名考研的學生人數由此增加。
National postgraduate entrance examination就是「全國研究生入學考試」，也可以用postgraduate qualification exam來表示。「考研」就是take part in the national postgraduate entrance examination / postgraduate qualification exam。也有部分學生是不需要參加全國研究生入學考試就能讀研的，因為他們獲得了「保研」（postgraduate recommendation）資格。
要被錄取為研究生，首先要通過全國研究生入學考試，這是qualifying examination / preliminary exam（初試），在過線之後才能參加secondary examination（複試），複試一般包括written examination（筆試）和oral examination（口試）或interview（面試）。在錄取之後，根據成績的高低，又分為government-supported graduate student（公費研究生）和self-supporting graduate student（自費研究生）。部分研究生是邊工作邊學習，此類研究生即on-the-job postgraduate student（在職研究生）。
