CodeGirl traces the Technovation Challenge, an international competition thataims to empower girls worldwide to develop apps. From rural Moldova to urbanBrazil to suburban Massachusetts, CODEGIRL follows teams who dream of holdingtheir own in the world’s fastest-growing industry. The winning team gets US$10K to complete and release their app, but every girl discovers somethingvaluable along the way. The film will be in English withChinese subtitles. The film will be followed by aQ&A and discussion. Tech jobs are growing three times faster than our colleges areproducing computer science graduates. By 2020, there will be one millionunfilled software engineering jobs in the USA. Through compelling interviews,artistic animation and clever flashpoint in popular culture, CODEexamines the reasons why more girls and people of color are not seekingopportunities in computer science and explores how cultural mindsets,stereotypes, educational hurdles and sexism all play roles in this nationalcrisis. CODE aims to inspire change in mindsets, in the educational system, instartup culture and in the way women see themselves in the field ofcoding. The Beijing American Center, in collaboration with the ChinaWomen’s Film Festival, proudly presents a screening and discussion of theOscar-nominated film Hidden Figures on September 20 at 6:30 pm. Inthe 1960s, as the U.S. raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA founduntapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians thatserved as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history.Based on the true stories of three of these women, the film shows how theyovercame gender, racial, and professional obstacles and played a fundamentalrole in successfully launching the first man into space. The film will be in Englishwith Chinese subtitles. (Director Theodore Melfi, 127 min)
