世界衛生組織（WHO）秘書長譚德塞8日在記者會上公開表示，過去兩三個月來受到人身攻擊及侮辱，說他是「黑人」甚至作出死亡恐嚇，他點名批評這些攻擊來自臺灣地區，臺灣的外事部門亦清楚知道。
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus revealed that he has received many personal attacks, including death threats, in the past three months. One persistent racist attack against him came from Taiwan.
譚德塞表示：「針對我的個人攻擊早在2到3個月前就開始了。這包括對我的辱罵，甚至用『黑人』、『黑鬼』等種族歧視言論攻擊我。」
譚德塞表示，如果只是對他個人的攻擊，他可以容忍3年甚至更長時間，但整個族群被侮辱時，他再也不能忍受。
Tedros said he "does not care" about the personal attacks, but said that when the whole African community is insulted, he won't tolerate it.
譚德塞指出人身攻擊在大約三個月前出現，他質疑民進黨當局外事部門明明知道這些事，但民進黨當局沒有制止，甚至轉而開始對他攻擊。

譚德塞說，世衛組織不搞政治，只專注拯救生命。
"Tedros is a dot in the whole universe. Issues targeted at me personally I don’t mind. Why would anyone in the right conscience think about his personal attack, ignoring the bigger challenge we’re facing as humanity? My focus is saving lives. We don’t do politics in WHO. We don’t."
「譚德塞個人只是整個宇宙中的一粒塵埃，不在乎無端的攻擊。理智的人都不會在乎個人的攻擊，而忽視更大的人類挑戰。我們關注拯救生命，世衛組織沒有政治操作。」
據大公文匯報導，幾個月來，臺灣當局通過輿論不斷詆毀WHO的公正性。臺媒更是從多種角度對WHO及譚德塞先生個人進行謾罵和攻擊。3月7日，臺灣雅虎新聞轉發了《上報》的獨家評論，將譚德塞污衊成一位「聲名狼藉」、「被政治野心吞噬」的機構負責人。
3月28日，香港電臺英語時事節目《脈搏》主持人唐若韞在訪問世衛助理總幹事艾爾沃德（Bruce Aylward）時，追問會否重新考慮讓臺灣成為世衛成員，藉機鼓吹香港人支持「臺獨」 圖源：大公報
被攻擊了3個月的譚德塞忍無可忍，公開回應。而臺灣民進黨當局和網軍們卻完全沒有收斂的意思。
在譚德賽4月8日做出上述表態之後，臺灣島內政客及極端網民做出了爆炸性反應，「臺獨」分子聚集的論壇PTT上，以大規模接力的方式，侮辱一個由國際社會公推出的領導人是「黑鬼」「黑奴」「黑人垃圾」。
而國民黨立委陳玉珍居然稱，「我們臺灣網民比較有正義感，攻勢比較凌厲！」
更過分的是，據臺灣中央通訊社報導，民進黨當局所謂「外交部」馬上發聲明提出「最嚴正抗議」，甚至要求譚德塞道歉。
Taiwan demanded an apology for what it called unnecessary and slanderous comments from WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
這份聲明說，臺灣是「成熟及高素養的先進民主國家」，絕無鼓動「國人」針對WHO幹事長本人進行人身攻擊的情況，更不可能發表任何種族歧視的言論……所以要道歉的是譚德塞！
蔡英文也表達強烈的抗議。她甚至藉機說出讓臺灣加入世衛組織的荒唐提議，「我相信只有臺灣的加入，世界衛生組織的拼圖才會完整」。
在4月9日外交部例行記者會上，有記者問：世衛組織總幹事表示，臺灣方面一直對其進行種族主義攻擊，他予以強烈譴責。中方是否贊同總幹事的說法？
趙立堅回答說：
中方反對任何借疫情搞政治化、汙名化的行為，強烈譴責針對譚德塞總幹事的人身攻擊和種族主義言行。
China opposes any attempt to use the epidemic for purpose of politicization or stigmatization, and strongly condemns the personal attacks and racist words and deeds against WHO DG Tedros.
世界衛生組織在譚德塞總幹事帶領下，積極履行自身職責，秉持客觀科學公正立場，為協助各國應對疫情、推動國際抗疫合作發揮了重要作用，得到國際社會普遍認可和高度讚譽。中方支持世界衛生組織在全球抗疫合作中繼續發揮領導作用。
Under the leadership of DG Tedros, the WHO has played an important role in assisting countries' responses to the epidemic and promoting international anti-epidemic cooperation by actively fulfilling its responsibilities and upholding an objective, science-based and unbiased stance, which has been widely recognized and highly praised by the international community. China supports the WHO in continuing to play a leading role in global anti-epidemic cooperation.
新冠肺炎疫情發生以來，臺灣民進黨當局上竄下跳，肆意進行政治操弄，持續炒作臺所謂參加世界衛生組織和世衛大會問題，其真實目的是「以疫謀獨」。我們對此堅決反對，他們的圖謀絕不會得逞。
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the DPP authorities in Taiwan have been doing all they can to make reckless political maneuvers and hype up Taiwan's participation in the WHO and the World Health Assembly. Their real intention is to seek independence under the pretext of the pandemic. We are firmly opposed to that. Their scheme will never succeed.
