Japanese Writer/Director Makoto Shinkai played with these familiar emotions to tear-jerking effect in his box office hit 「Your Name」.
I'm always searching, for something, for someone.
Unlike the usual feel-good start of many animations, 「Your Name」 plunges into an abnormal beginning.
Two Japanese teenagers, one boy one girl, find themselves waking up in each other’s bodies.
I do feel like I've been in a strange dream lately… A dream about someone else's life?
A series of random, intermittent body-switching experiences ensues with the small-town girl Mitsuha fighting to adjust to city life in a man’s body,
and Tokyo boy Taki awkwardly discovering his 「feminine side」.
The duo tries to communicate by leaving notes in Mitsuha’s notebook and memos on Taki’s mobile phone.
Before the story gets 「Disneyfied」 with the two body-switchers falling in love,
it takes an abrupt turn with one of Mitsuha’s notes telling Taki about a comet that is expected to hit the town she lives in.
Mitsuha, you're dreaming right now, aren't you?
Following this, Taki wakes up in his own body and can never switch bodies with Mitsuha again.
Determined to meet Mitsuha in person, Takigoes on an expedition to Mitsuha’s village, only to be told that a comet destroyed the village three years ago.
Taki exhausts all means to reconnect with Mitsuda's body in order to save her from the catastrophe.
Through the drinking of Kuchikamizake, a ritual wine, Taki connects with Mitsuha’s spirit, but only momentarily.
Taki! I came to see you.
When twilight falls, the two attempt to write their names onto each other’s palms so they can remember each other,
but Mitsuha disappears before she finishes.
Who was it? Who? Who did I come to see? Someone dear to me. I don't want to forget. I shouldn't forget! Who? Who? What's your name?
At this point, with the regret of losing something so precious and after so much effort, it would take a strong viewer to keep the tears from welling up.
But we’re not given too much time to wallow in pity, as we fast-forward five years, to see Taki, having lost all his memories of his 「out-of-body」 experience, catch sight of Mitsuha on a train.
Feeling an inexplicable sense of mission, he disembarks to search for Mitsuha. When the two finally catch up, they asked in unison: Kimi No Nawa (what’s your name)?
Though the themes of love, separation and reunion are old themes, Shinkai has created a masterful juxtaposition of magical realism and sci-fi.
The relatable feeling of love and loss, the intense nature of ceaseless pursuit, adorned with beautiful cinematography, make Your Name strangely moving.
After all, who hasn’t had a dream broken by reality? Who hasn’t loved and lost? If that’s you, fret not.
Your Name takes you on a poignant journey of emotional resonance while leaving you with an empowering message – love is out there, keep searching!
Wherever you are in the world, I'll search for you.
