The film tells the real-life story of death row inmate Cameron Todd Willingham, who was executed in 2004 for the arson murder of his three children, although the evidence used to convict him remains controversial.

It’s not the first time Dern has helped bring a true story to the screen.

In last year’s The Tale, she played Jennifer Fox, a documentary filmmaker who rereads an essay she wrote at age 13 that makes her question her childhood relationship with her coach.
