Li Geng was born in 1950. His name was given by Qi Bai Shi. He is Li Keran’s youngest son. He was tutored in art by Li Keran, Li Kuchan, Huang Zhou, and Huang Yongyu. He was Li Keran’s secretary when he was young, thus the important art collections in the libraries were accessible to him. He also visited Li Keran’s contemporaries who always welcome him.
When China opened up to the world in late 1970s, Li Geng went to study in Japan. Following this he taught in Kyoto University of Art and Design in Japan. He met a number of influential cultural experts, such as Yasushi Inoue, Takeshi Umehara, Kaii Higashiyama, and Tatsuo Takayama, who then introduced him to Japan’s cultural community. Since then, he presented his solo art exhibitions in 40 cities across Japan. From 1986 to 1988, Li Geng delivered lectures on Orental Art at Minsk University in Germany. Li Geng researched in wide-ranging disciplines which included Japanese Art, Chinese Ink Painting, historical Italian Frescoes, historical cultural legacies, Tunhuangology, Chinese Classical Poetry, European Orchestra Music, the Mustard Seed Garden (catalogue of Chinese Paintings) and European Copper Plate Art and Ukiyo-e. In 1992, Li Geng researched on Gustav Mahler. In 1993, he was conferred the medal with Purple Ribbon, the highest Japanese Cultural Award by the Prime Minister of Japan, Kiichi Miyazawa, for his contributions to culture. This was followed by his honorary residency in the city of Kakogawa. In 2009, in order to raise funds for the building of the Li Keran Art Academy, he made a concerted effort relentlessly. Li Geng lived abroad for more than 30 years, mastering the blending of Eastern and Western Art in China and beyond.
