US artist Robin Whiteman is known for her hand-carved porcelain sculptures, portraying fairytale-like characters and human-animal hybrids that are distinctly small and delicate.
"I like things that are feminine, soft, organic, small, intimate… They are not considered powerful, but they are actually the source of all power." Whiteman’s art invites us to quieten down, taking us away from the noises of modern life.
She is currently also showing four works at a group show at Munich’s Storpunkt Gallery called Shades of Black, and for her, black is 「depth and possibility. Black makes me think of deep water, fertile soil and infinite space.」 Robin Whiteman loves animals and they are an integral part of her life: "We live on a hill between two lakes. There is often a murder of crows hanging out in the yard and eating the compost. You can hear bears, wolves, foxes and owls echoing at night. 「At the age of eleven, I liked to play with all kinds of clay. I remember making my very first sculpture, a Madonna and a guinea pig, almost simultaneously. So not much has changed! I was lucky enough to have a teacher who saw something in me and said to me: 『Some people can make a prune that looks just like a prune, but some people can make a prune that has a magic.』」 Inspired by mythology, fairytales and religion, Whiteman's work focuses on the inner world. Through representations of masculinity and feminity and the relationship between human and animal, dualism runs through her entire oeuvre.「我的藝術受到我的想像力影響很深,通常沒有任何線索和形式,當我的思維和靈感開始浮現的時候,我看到它們之間相互關聯。 My art is deeply influenced by my imagination, usually without any clue or form in the beginning. Then, eventually, my thinking mind catches up, and I see connections. The whole process has to do with the mind, so it's more like meditation than production," says Whiteman. Whiteman's sculptures are intuitive. On her own in the studio, carving details and features of people and animals, she feels they are her close friends. "I feel calmer when a piece is finished but never really satisfied. I’m interested in the process mostly and how the work is continually evolving, even if subtly." Whiteman writes on her website about how the culture and landscape of America change in alarming ways, her parent’s struggle with dementia, and the terror of her own cancer diagnosis. 「There is a quote from the poet Adrien Rich that I found when I was fifteen. I think it says it all… 'I am an instrument in the shape of a woman translating pulsations into images for the relaxation of the body and the reconstruction of the mind.'」For her, "Everything is changing. Everything either evolves or dies."Works by Robin Whiteman is on show at Han Feng Art Space, New York. 50 West 29th Street, Apt. 6E 敬請提前預約 By appointment onlyHan Feng Art Space @ Amanyangyun: 6161 Yuanjiang Road, Shanghai紐約藝術空間 Han Feng Art Space, New York:50 West 29th Street, Apt. 6E New York, New York 10001
