提及在上世紀末到本世紀初盛極一時的新金屬音樂，就不得不提一支重要的樂隊，他們人多勢眾，他們聲名狼藉，以至於他們的音樂甚至直接引發謀殺，他們總是躲藏在面具背後，似乎被面具遮住的臉比面具更為恐怖，他們的表演混亂骯髒，幾乎每次演出都是一場騷亂，但他們因此而擁有了世界各地上百萬的歌迷，他們捏合了另類金屬、重金屬和說唱金屬，他們的音樂，黑暗，暴力，極端，瘋狂，他們的噪音比工業魔王Marilyn Manson更令人驚慄，他們的音樂非常的重，重得以至於在各種歌迷評選中，他們的鼓手Joey Jordison總是被奉為眾多樂隊鼓手中的老大，被稱為最重的重金屬樂隊，這當然是Slipknot樂隊(活結樂隊)。
1995年9月，Slipknot樂隊成立於美國愛荷華州（又譯艾奧瓦州）的首府Des Moines地區，經過成立之初的發展之後，以Shawn "Clown" Crahan為首的這支樂隊最終形成了多達九人的固定陣容。Slipknot樂隊的九名成員們都以面具作為他們最重要的表演工具，無論到哪裡，都只見面具，而不見他們的廬山真面目。
