首先，這三個介詞在表示時間的時候，他們後面的時間由籠統變得精準，見下圖：
介詞 in：
在年份、月份、季節、朝代等前面，因為這樣的時間段比較長，所以用 in，如：
in the 1990s
in the Tang dynasty
in November
表示平時的上下午和傍晚，也用in
in the morning
in the afternoon
in the evening
介詞 on：
在具體的日期前用 on，包括節日，包括含有具體日期的上下午、晚上、傍晚，或者被修飾限定的上午下午和晚上，例如：
on October the 1st
On Christmas Day
on a fine morning
on the afternoon of Monday

用在具體的點鐘之前，例如
at 12：00

at noon 在中午
at dawn在黎明
at daybreak 在破曉時分

用在節日前的時候，便是節日前後，如 at Christmas
